The argument of whether doctors should be allowed to assist patients in suicide or not, has been a very sensitive and emotional topic for people of both sides. With machines to substitute organs and blood, there is no doubt that technology has helped save and prolong many lives. Assisted suicide should be legal for the critically ill because it's their life, they are going to die regardless, and they wont have to suffer. Each person has a right over their own life. If a person's quality of life is poor and critical, they should have the right to chose how they want to go on.

The right to commit suicide or to seek assistance should be up to the person who is in poor health condition. They have to deal with the long term consequences of their actions and should have the right to do so. No one should have the say-so of someone elses body nor should they have the privilege of deciding wether someone should live or die. The decision of life should be left in the hands of the critically ill person and should be dealt with as a right of choice instead of having one be forced to do something they do not want to do. Life should be the choice of the life keeper. I think that assisted suicide should be a decision made by the person who either wants to live, or wants to die.

No one should be forced to die a "bad death". A terminally ill patient can need many days, weeks and / or months of one on one care. This ends up becoming far ely expensive for the patient who sometimes will end up dying anyway. If, infact, they are going to die soon anyway, the bills pile up on the family members and / or become a burden on the family members who have to sort out the money situation of the dying or dead patient. Having this constant care for the ill patient can also be a real inconvenience for either a family member or a family friend who needs to be with the patient for many hours at a time. Not only is this costly, but it is a true inconvenience in multiple ways.

If the patient would rather just die then keep the ongoing problems from occuring, then why not let them do what they want to do? Especially if they are going to die anyway; which is the end result in many cases. A person might as well be able to chose how they want to be "handled", so to speak, then to be an unwanted burden upon others. I believe that assisted suicide, in this case, should be the decision left up to the patient because they should be able to chose wether or not they want to keep spending their money on medical treatment or not. Feeling like an everyday hassle is, also, no way for someone to die. The last but most important reason that assisted suicide should be up to the person whos health is in critical condition, is that they should be able to decide wether or not they want to suffer or not.

Being terminally ill is so painful and sometimes causes life to be unbearable for a person. Death, for those who are in that much pain, serves as a relief to the intolerable pain they endure day in and day out. Life with expensive drugs and constant suffering is just something that some people can not handle. Some end up suffering so much hoping that a natural death will occur sooner. A serious disorder or disease has effected their quality of life to the point where they no longer wish to continue living.

They should not have to suffer like this. I think that as a patients' death approaches, they should have the choice to suffer and live as long as they can or if they want to go, they should be able to commit suicide. These suffering people do not want to be a hinderance to the people around them and who love them.
