At the end of the cold war there were situations going on all around the world including Nicaragua, China and the Soviet Union. President Bush had to deal with these situations the best that he could because of their importance to the changing world around him. When the president went to Beijing he spoke to Chinese leaders about increasing trade and tried to create a closer relationship with Chinese leaders. There were riots in Tiananmen Square in Beijing demanding democracy. The Chinese government issued a ban on public demonstrations. But the demonstrations grew bigger and bigger.

Eventually the number of demonstrators rose to one million, the protests were seen all around the world on tv. Deng Xiaoping tried to move tanks into the city but the crowds of students stopped them. On June 2, Deng made the decision to shoot and kill innocent demonstrators. This was a shock to the world. The U.S. suspended high-level exchanges with China. Later Bush waived a congressional ban on loans for companies doing business in China.

China got rid of martial law in Beijing in 1990. In Nicaragua Bush used the Reagan policy of unremitting hostility. Instead of agreeing with Ortega and disbanding the Contras Bush continued to support them. This kept the Contras a threat to the Nicaraguan government. Bush also continued the economic embargo, which left the Nicaraguan economy in ruins.

Ortega was forced to lay off 35,000 government employees. Later he called off the nineteen-month-old cease-fire with the Contras because of Contra attacks in Nicaragua. The Soviet Union and the United States were in a arms race to see who can get the best weapon. But that came to a halt when Gorbachev's government went bankrupt. Bush couldn't spend any more money on weapons research because he was under pressure to reduce the defense budget. The two countries leaders met at Camp David and agreed to reduce their reserves of long-range nukes by 30 percent and their chemical weapons by 80 percent.

These situations were dealt with by Bush's administration in a great manner. The US appreciated what Bush did because he kept the US safe.
