". web The Four Functions of Management Management by definition is generic in scope and can have varying meaning to a small company infrastructure versus a large company's. Management structures can be in-depth in a large company and superficial in a smaller organization yet; both can be equally successful. What connects management on every level is the need for creative problem-solving.

This function is essential to the overall success of any size company. The use of management assets defines the company mission and carries out objectives. Creative problem-solving is consummated in the course of four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Planning No organization operates perfectly.

If all business environments were perfect, organizational management would have little or no relevance. To have a productive working environment there are critical success factors that must be adhered to for optimal results. The initial stage is to identify the task at hand. This will help determine how resources (employees) will be used for their strengths and commissioned to contribute for the betterment of the organization.

A managing director will emerge and identify the key deliverable's, provide a vision, manage workflow, and delegate accordingly. The next step is to set up a schedule for completing tasks. A schedule provides a structured framework within which progress can be measured. Planning is more like contingency planning because it is a series of interventions that look to improve overall effectiveness and employee well-being. Organizing The ability to organize and execute a strategy is the ultimate challenge in today's business environment. Above and beyond organizing a sound plan of action, management is responsible for motivating jobholders to the direction of the final purpose at an achievable timeline.

Being in charge of the directives, management must delegate a chore and a well-organized way to arrive at completion. The focus is on supply, skill, and control of responsibilities as well as the delivery of information within the organization. Upon organizing an execution strategy, management must be ready to build the structure with resources that align a company's capabilities with its plan. Once a formal strategy has been put into effect, management will lead with dependable facts and influence employees through motivation, communication, leadership and discipline. The purpose of leading is to guide the behavior of all personnel to perform the organization's mission and objectives.

Control Management control is similar to the general perception of Quality Control. No product or service or product would be worth buying into without internal quality or control. Management must look at the contents of the work and scrutinize the details to ensure that the product is indeed one of high quality. Without this discovery process, a project could appear unorganized, unprofessional or just plain wrong.

It is imperative to analyze all resources for accuracy and to check for consistency and integrity in the data. The data used to support the key deliverable's should correlate with the final goal. Management in My Work Situation My current work situation truly defines the word "oxymoron". I went from leading an aggressive but structured financial services corporation, to owning my own firm could not withstand the after effect of 9/11, to now working with my father in a highly profitable logistics corporation that is successful in spite of its antiquated makeup.

My father has the old school mentality. As the owner of our 15-year-old freight forwarding company, he is headed in the direction of retirement. A typical week for my father is laborious. There mere mention of the word "computer" makes him break out into a sweat! He works so many hours because he does all the managerial aspects of the business by hand. He refuses to conform to the idea that technology is here to stay.

To give one an idea of what our office is like; 50% of our accounting functions are still manual, we have 15-year-old word processors (that are the target of just about every joke we have in the office) and instead of tracking valuable information online through a network (which we have ironically), we have separate places for "piles" throughout the office that represent a specific meaning for the days activity. Despite these limitations, he, and the company have been very successful. Working in this small company made up of 3 people does not provide a great deal of formal structure. We work within a very flexible business model where each employee is cross-trained and required to put their weight where necessary in order to fulfill the customers' expectations for service. Our employees flourish in this environment because talent and dedication can be used to reinforce the moral of the company. Taking a proactive leadership role, I am responsible for the daily operations of the company.

I perform in-depth analysis of complex problems related to material requirements; inventories, schedules, and configuration control all while guiding others and resolving problems that lead to improved efficiency. At the same time I serve as an internal advocate that ensures the delivery of our services is consistent with the goals and expectations of the company thereby maximizing customer satisfaction and retention. By executing this leadership role, I am able to expedite and complete production activities including the control of material requirements and production schedules to avoid schedule delays. Although our office is small in scope, we are very productive at serving our customers. This may not always be the case without implementing a better system that includes technology.

I am hoping that adapting to new environments is an area that we will cover and I can learn from going forward in this class.
