There are varius problems that many students have with the University of Memphis. One major problem that most students have with the university is the outrageous prices of books in the on-campus bookstore. I remember on August 23, 2003, the Saturday before school started, a new incoming freshman, Renee Wills, and her parents were in the bookstore on campus complaining about the steep prices of books. "People these days are crazy and money hungry.
The prices of books back n my day were never this much", argued Renee's mother. According to some information I gathered, the average freshman spends about three hundred and thirty dollars on books. As a person's cumulative hours increase, causing a change of classification, a required book can cost anywhere from $95 to $200. Three major points have to be considered to find the solution of this problem: the feasiblity of the solution, the increase of cost, and time efficiency.
As far as the feasiblity of the solution, the problem would never get fixed if the solution is not able to be carried out. In addition, there are problems tuition hikes; therefore, cost does not need to increase. Since the cost of books is a current problem, a solution needs to be done in a timely manner. Three possible alternatives come to mind when probing this problem. A first possible solution to the U of M's book problem would be to include books in tuition.
The students that attend the university already have to pay $1850 if they live in state and $5429 if they are out-of-state residents; why not include the books in tuition? If books were included in tuition, people would not have to work extra hours that could be used for studying. In addition, the solution would not be done in a timely manner because it would take time to gather every student's information about the costs of his or her books. The solution is feasible, but it would raise the cost of tuition..
