The adult I have chosen to do my report is a Teleworker. A Teleworker sells storage space on the Internet to large companies. This life style allows the Teleworker to work from home. All sales can be easily made through email or on the phone, these facilities can all be found at home. ICT has had a big impact on the teleworkers, it allows a complete change in the working environment and a change in the way the Teleworker does her job. Instead of post a sail in the form of a letter the documents can be emailed direct to the Teleworker's computer, this saves time and money i.e. The time it takes the letter to get to the receipt and the money for the stamp.

The teleworker uses ICT in her profession to contact possible buyers using a phone or fax machine; write out invoices, contracts, and purchase forms using excel or word. The teleworker may also use a pager or mobile phone to talk to contacts on the move. These new forms of ICT allow the teleworker to live a different life style, she can work at home instead of in an office and she can easily work from somewhere else, i.e. a restaurant or bar. The teleworker uses ICT in her social life to maybe contact friends and family or to organise days out. She may also use the Internet to subscribe to clubs and newsgroups. She most certainly would use a TV or radio for entertainment.

The teleworker may use MSN Messenger to talk to family, friends and co-workers over the Internet. She can sign up for a. net passport which can the be used for signing in to a hotmail inbox or an EBay account, or MSN messenger. Once signed in to MSN Messenger he can add the email address of his contacts to his address book and talk to them while they are online. An advantage of doing this is that the messages are instant and it is more convenient than email. A disadvantage is that it is not as reliable than email. The teleworker may also use email to contact her friends and family.

With an email client the teleworker can email files and photos to her family and friends and even her co-workers. The teleworker may use Outlook to access her email and to send emails. The advantage of doing this is that she would not have to login to a web based email account. A disadvantage would be that not all email accounts can be accessed from outlook, and a POP address is required to retrieve email from these accounts. The teleworker may use ICT in her personal life to, bid for goods online on website like EBay. She may use the Internet to access roadmaps on streetmap. co. uk; she may use websites like Amazon to order books and other types of media.

Ebay is an online auction site. It allows users to bid for goods that are being sold by other users. It also allows you to sell items online. When you enter a bid for an item you have to enter your highest bid, this is the maximum you are allowed to bid.

If you win a bid you get in contact with the seller and discuss how you are going to pay for them item, where the item is to be sent and the final price of the item. The advantages of this service are that you can by items from anywhere in the world. Another advantage is that you can get items at very low prices. e.g. Lord of The Rings DVD in the shops is lb 19.99. On EBay it is lb 2. A Disadvantage of Ebay is that a winning bidder may not pay for the item. As a result of this the bidder will have a warning put on his record and will have a bad reputation on the website.

Another disadvantage is that there maybe credit card fraud. Amazon is an online bookstore, but Amazon also sells other types of media like CDs, DVDs, VHS, and games. Amazon also sell second hand books and other media. The teleworker would have to pay for the shipping costs if she were to order something. To order something is pretty simple, all the teleworker would have to do is enter he delivery address and name, followed by her pay method and credit card details. An advantage of this is that she could get books, videos and other media on Amazon, when she could not get them anywhere else.

Another advantage is that she could get these items much cheaper than in the shops. A disadvantage is that shipping costs must be paid if something is ordered from overseas. This could make a cheap item become more expensive than in a shop. Streetmap. co. uk may be used by the teleworker if she needs to find her way to a possible buyer. She may also use it to get a map to show someone else where she lives or will meet them. An advantage of this is she can get maps for free off the Internet for anywhere in the world.

A disadvantage is that the map may not show all of what she may need and the maps are a limited size. The teleworker most certainly would use a credit. She would need a credit card for all sorts of reasons. One reason is that she may need to by some stationery straight away to complete a sale. The credit card would allow her to do this without having to pay for the item straight away. She would pay for all the items she had purchased using the credit card at the end of the month.

An advantage of this is that she would be able to purchase items over the Internet or over the phone using her credit card number. Another advantage is that she may not have the cash at hand to pay for and item so she can use her credit card to get some money out of the bank at a cash point. A disadvantage is that if someone had her credit card details they would be able to use her credit card to purchase something offline or over the phone. Another disadvantage is that at the end of the month when the invoice is sent to the teleworker she would have to pay interest on the money that she borrowed. ICT has a massive impact on the teleworker's life.

Without ICT the teleworker's life would be very different indeed. Instead of working at home the teleworker may have had to work at home. Without a credit card the teleworker would have had to pay with cash up front. Without a phone the teleworker would have had to talk to friends or family face to face. This shows that the job of the teleworker is dependent on ICT and would be of a very different nature if ICT were not as advanced as it is today.
