American Experience Louis Farrakhan Louis Farrakhan is best known today as the head of the Nation of Islam. The Nation of Islam supports black independence along with some of the practices and beliefs of Islam religion. One of its main goals is for blacks to attain self-sufficiency in today's culture. Farrakhan has been criticized by some as a racist towards non-black races but others say he is a credit to all races. Farrakhan has sparked more criticism in recent years, particularly from the U.S. Government, because of his 'world friendship tour.

' During the tour he visited several countries run by dictators. He is an advocate of peace between all people and tends to spark a lot of thought and new ideas into people which is why I believe the Government does not think very highly of him. Louis Eugene Wolcott was born on May 11th, 1933 in New York City. He grew up in Boston and became a nightclub singer in his early twenties where he was known as "Calypso Gene". He joined the Nation of Islam through the encouragement of Malcolm X and changed his name to Louis X. He rose quickly in the Nation of Islam because of his speaking and singing talents. When the split occurred between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, Farrakhan became increasingly critical of Malcolm X. Farrakhan formed a new Nation of Islam in the 1970's after Muhammad's son, Wallace Muhammad, changed the name and the purpose of the original organization I believe Louis Farrakhan is an overall good man in his teachings and beliefs and if more people listen to him, this country would have far less problems.
