Daisy's Attitudes And Choices In Life example essay topic

298 words
In the stories "Daisy Miller", "Under the Lion's Paw" and "The Open Boat" each author does attempt to capture reality. Henry James is more of a personal realism writer, Hamlin Garland is social realism and Stephen Crane is universal realism writer. In "Daisy Miller" one of the main characters Daisy is an American who goes to Europe and the stories tell how others perceive Daisy and her rash ways. It looks into how Americans are perceived in a Europe town and people in general who are not in their normal culture. The interesting part of the story is that Mr. Winterbourne is an American also. He is very sophisticated and drawn to Daisy rash attitude.

Daisy Miller is very free spirited in regards to living her life the way she wants it be lived and Mr. Winterbourne has a hard time understanding Daisy's attitudes and choices in life. Hamlin Garland captures the realities of farm life and his portrayal of the lives of women on the farm. He hints at the apparent need for economic reform. Stephen Crane does a good job on capturing human versus nature.

He reminds the reader that no matter what your economic status is, no one has a choice on when they can die. The whole story I was anticipating the captain was going to die and save the others or that there would be a happy ending. The way he chose to end the story proved his point to me that life does not always play out for the better and no one knows when Nature is going to run her course. The differences that exist between the three is the type of realism each chooses to focus on.
