Dad's job relocations and dance. One kept me moving, one kept me grounded. I've lived in six states and seven cities: Indianapolis, IN; Racine, WI; New Brighton, MN; Denver, CO; Mission Viejo, CA; Milwaukee, WI. What have I learned from all of this moving? It's simple: a larger bedroom is better than a smaller one, having kids your own age in the neighborhood is a big plus, it's not so bad being around your family all the time, and there is always somewhere to find friends. Dance is what made moving easier for me.

I've been on the stage since first grade. My debut was with "Kids are Music" during my California years. Just when I had started to think, "Hey, this is cool", we were on the road again, to Wisconsin. At eight years old, I began dancing in earnest at the Milwaukee Ballet School.

I was accepted into their junior company following eighth grade. Talk about a huge accomplishment! Not only would we perform at all of the company's events, but it also meant being eligible for auditions at other companies around the country. Shortly after I received that acceptance letter, my dad informed the family of another move. I was devastated. After living in Stillwater for two months, I asked my mom to pick me up late from school so I could audition for the school's dance team.

To my relief, I made it! I was on the team for six seasons and was captain for three. I am also a member of the competition group at my local studio and have been on the top line for the past three years. All of this training has kept me super busy and has helped me forget how hard moving is.

It has given me discipline and confidence and has taught me to wear a smile. The best part about dance is having bunches of friends that share something I love. Being a dancer allows you to take a class anywhere and immediately find people you can bond with. I know firsthand that moving isn't fun, but dancing is.

And dancing helps make it easier to find friends in a new locale. I hope my next move will be a meaningful experience, a journey to St. Peter, and that the Gustavus dance team and college life will bring me a whole new set of friends.
