Dance Throughout The Entire Play example essay topic
"Cats" is the longest-running show on Broadway and it even Won the 1983 Tony for Best Musical. Although the play is 2 hours and 40 minutes longs, it's unique songs and theatrical performances keep the audience members wide awake. The characters in the play are all cats. The costumes consist of body suits and talks with matching hair and face paint. The actors have fake fur attach to their face that matches their costume and face paint.
Each "cat" has unique markings and plays a specific character. All of the cats have their own names such as, Alonzo, Bombalurina, Ma cavity, and Skimbleshanks. The actors take on mannerisms of real cats and when they are in full costume, the audience forgets that these aren't actually just big cats running across the stage on all fours. The singing in "Cats" is amazing. All of the actors have outstanding voices.
The actors all sing while dancing, which makes the fact that they always hit their notes perfectly, even more impressive. The "cats" dance throughout the entire play. All of the dances are complicated and include difficult turns, leaps, and some acrobatics. The background of the stage is a 3-dimensional setting built to look like a dump. The cats use the "dump" as part of the stage. They enter and exit through old tires in the floor and jump across the other objects as if they were real cats playing in a dump.
The play included all types of dancing, including Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Tap, and Lyrical. Most of the dancing, however, was a form of Jazz. At one point in the play a group of bugs perform a tap dance. This scene was comical, but the tapping was outstanding. Most of the actors are accomplished singers, actors, and dancers with a lot of previous experience. Many of them have attended performing art schools and not only rehearse their main role, but also understudy 2 to 3 other characters.
The actors are all well practiced, which is evident in the quality of the show. I would strongly recommend this play to anyone who loves music, dance, and / or cats. It is a very unique play that continues to fill your thoughts for days after you have seen the play. The play is too long and too complicated to fully appreciate the first time you see it, so I would love to see it again someday. The dancing and singing inspired me to come home and work to become a better performer. "Cats" is an exceptional Broadway play and it deserves all of the praise it has ever been given..
