Dancing In The Movie example essay topic
Annie fits in to the musical comedy genre and its main purpose was to entertain the audience. It doesn't seem to have witty social commentary. Its purely for entertainment purpose and was set as a big budget movie. Little orphan Annie played by Aileen Quinn has a lyric soprano voice type and range. Her voice does fit the character but with such a strong little girl I wished for a stronger voice and more dramatic. But Quinn gives a nice rendition of "Tomorrow".
That song is easily Annie's individual theme song. Aileen Quinn looks perfect as Annie but sometimes has a tendency to overact. Miss Hannigan the diabolical drunk head of the orphanage played by mezzo-soprano Carol Burnett has a dramatic voice type. Carol Burnett is the perfect actor to play the role as Miss Hannigan and her voice definitely fits the role.
Her acting is very believable and she possesses a comedic talent. Albert Finney plays Oliver 'Daddy' Warbucks has baritone lyric voice and fits the role. His acting is believable and he gets some laughs. Tim Curry plays the evil criminal Rooster Hannigan. Bernadette Peters plays Rooster's sidekick Lily St. Regis. Geoffrey Holder plays Warbucks helper Punjab, He adds a little depth to the movie.
The beautiful lyric soprano Ann Reinking plays Ms. Grace Farrell who is Warbuck's personal assistant. Reinking's singing is well done and definitely fits the character. Reinking especially showed her dancing talent in the song "We got Annie" in which the staff and her sing and dance together. Dancing and singing in the movie go hand in hand. There is a huge dancing number with the theatre personnel in "Let's go to the Movies" in which the Radio City Music hall makes an appearance with a wonderful dance number. "It's a Hard Knock Life" is a wonderful song in the movie but much of the choreography is lackluster and only saved by occasional gymnastics.
In the song "I Think i'm Gonna like it here" the staff and Annie perform a delightful dance number consisting of them showing her around and cleaning up the place. The song "Easy Street" Rooster, Miss Hannigan, and Lily do a mediocre dance number that sometimes seems choppy. At the end they finish with Annie and Warbucks doing a delightful tap dance number in the midst of a celebration. The traditional tap dance is a nice touch but, it very late in the movie. What was weird was Miss Hannigan atop an elephant. All in all the singing was pedestrian with an occasional bright spot like "Tomorrow" (White House).
Mostly the dancing in the movie was done well. The dance number in "We Got Annie" was great. The direction of the movie is done well. The pace of the movie is steady and moves along easily with every song. The production aspects of the movie were excellent. The portrayal of 1930's New York and the small sections of it looked very real with the carts and model T's on the street.
Mr. Warbucks mansion was very elaborate and decorative especially at the end with fireworks as the backdrop. You can tell that they spent a lot of money on the set and design. All the costumes were great from the ragged clothes on the orphans, Miss Hannigan clothes, and Punjab's outfits were eye catching. What was really nice was Annie's bright red dress she wore at the end of the movie. All the outfits fit the time and were decorative and brilliant.
Since this was the DVD version the sound had cd quality and was great to hear in the surround sound. Annie is definitely a family movie and anyone can watch it. Even with some flaws such as some of the dancing and mediocre singing the story is very simple optimistic and you just can't pass up the very catchy songs. That is why id recommend this movie to anyone and why I plan on showing it to my kids in the future.
