Capital punishment has been used for almost 4,000 years by governments. In the mid 1900's it became a very controversial issue in the United States leading the death penalty to be abolished in 1972. Under certain conditions, this form of punishment was brought back five years later in 1977. There are nine ways in which a person can be placed in death row in Connecticut. These nine ways are: murder a policeman or fireman in the line of duty, rape resulting in murder, kidnap resulting in murder, two or more of the same felony, murder for hire, sell drugs resulting in death, murder previously and kill again, and murder in prison. Any one of these nine ways will result in capital punishment. I believe that the death penalty is a good way to punish those who have committed any of the listed crimes above, although, there are also reasons against the death penalty. The death penalty is used in every state except Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
In 2000, 88% of worldwide executions took place in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the USA. Eighty-five people were executed in the United States in 2000, only two of them being women. Connecticut uses lethal injection to kill the criminals. The amount of executions from 1930-1976 is 21 and the minimum age is 18 in Connecticut. Some people believe that the death penalty is a good way to punish those who have committed a heinous crime. One reason for this is deterrence.
In other words, the death penalty causes murders to not want the death penalty, which would later decrease the homicide rate.
