Difference Between Boys And Girls example essay topic

726 words
Gender issue is inherent to our lives. People, objects, animals are either declined as a male or female representative. Oblivious to our common origin as human beings we have a tendency of categorizing anything in two-well defined sectors. Gender discrimination has evolved to a more subtle way of widening gender gap as it has become "the self esteem gender gap" especially in Education as it is a major reason in girls' and boys' difference in choice of career paths. Do we have equal chances as a boy and as a girl as we enter the Educational system?

A study in the United States that was made with boys and girls whom the age range was 9-11 years old has shown that when boys and girls start school are taught that there is no difference between them and that they all possess the same abilities concerning any field that require intellectual effort. The difference of physical strength remained unquestioned. Over the years, the common belief that boys are more apt to succeed and be interested in science takes its full meaning as the study reveals that boys are subtly pushed towards scientific subjects by teachers as they tend to pay more attention when it is a boy who is asking a question whereas girls feel a little out-of-place in this manly atmosphere and would like to receive more encouragement on the teachers' part. Family has also a hand in that, it contributes to setting a difference between boys and girls by, at the beginning, bringing them up differently: girls with dolls and boys with cars and guns. The boy is supposed to follow his father's example and fill in the blank cases that re appointed to him at birth such as being good at maths, being protective with the weaklings... To sum it all up to behave like his male model, his father and take the place that was intended for him.

The question remains: Do we have equal chances as a boy and as a girl as we enter the Educational system? Tools are certainly given to all of us without consideration to gender or race but it all depends on the way they are distributed to us and the value it holds for the society that is what makes all the difference in the world. Let's suppose that a girl was given a 'home education' with a preceptor and with all it involves, she then does not feel the pressure of gender, she becomes the Chief Executive Officer of a multinational company she will inspire as much respect as a man in the same position would have inspired. Meanwhile as years pass by, a widening gap is taking place among students as they go further in their studies: boys have filled maths classes and have all decide to become either engineers or have enrolled in a scientifically oriented course of studies, girls for their part have fallen behind in science but have joined in a significant number literature or history or philosophy classes. The phenomenon of "self-esteem gender gap" that is invading our schools is a problem that has been forged by arbitrary behaviors on the grounds of common beliefs. Stereotypes have invaded school and have some ways of educating depending on whom you have in front of you.

"In today's society sex and gender seem to have two separate connotative meanings. Sex is a more scientific term that explains physical traits and sexual preferences. Gender carries a more social tone" Gender is becoming more the result of an education, a way of behaving that a genetic combination or a physical trait. It is sure for a fact that gender is determined at birth, sometimes by scientific manipulations but today our gender, our sex also determines the way we are going to be educated, in which area, we will certainly graduate and we know for a fact that if born a girl, she, for starters, will not be paid the same as her male classmates.

The consequences of such disparity as we already seem to see is gender gap extreme attitudes from both parts such as feminism on the girls's ide and sexual harassment and viewing women as sexual objects on the other side.
