Somerset Maugham also uses some kinds of irony, describing the sufferings of a woman, who is really healthy, but trying to seem poor and weak. We also can find some similes (a type of comparison). Maugham's prose is full of different stylistic devices. He is a real genius of literature (i mean english literature). I liked his story very much and i can advise everyone to read it. English literature has a lot of great writers and most of them are really talented and famous. Jo course, now days literature is not so amazing as the literature of past. But there will be many new talented writers, i suppose. Literature helps us to develop critical attitude to life, to develop thinking and describing the reality we live in. We should read different literature to become more clever and intelligent. We should get our children used to reading and thinking.
More you read more you know and reflect. This is my own opinion. And also we must be able to analyse what we read because reading without thinking has no use. It doesn't really matter what you read. Novels or scientific literature - you must think about it. Reading is very useful for your general education and increasing your educational level.
