Dormer And Finch example essay topic
He soon finds out that he mistakenly killed his friend and partner. Dormer is struck with an overbearing sense of guilt and remorse and begins experiencing insomnia as a result. In the meantime, Finch begins to manipulate and stalk Dormer because he is the only one who knows his shocking secret. The theme of the film is that integrity can set you free. Dormer chose the pathway of lying when he killed his partner. His whirlwind of lies caught up with him and caused serious psychological side effects.
Because he didn't tell the truth, he was haunted by his mistake and suffered from insomnia and eventually, death. The program's dominant message is to capture the viewers' attention and make them watch the movie. The alternative message was about manipulation. How someone can appear to have it all together on the outside, how they can seem nice and honest. In reality, they " re nothing they appear to be, yet they are able to manipulate those around them with their lies. Will Finch was exactly that type of character.
He was able to trick Dormer into believing he didn't mean to kill the young girl, that it was only an accident. But in his twisted mind, he knew he was a cold-blooded killer. He realized that Dormer killed his partner by accident and decided to pretend they were on the same boat, hoping that Dormer would somehow empathize with him. His cruel intentions worked and Dormer began to trust Finch. I believe the program is very effective because it can teach the viewers about the effects of dishonesty and manipulation. It showed us that being dishonest will only come back to haunt you, and the truth will set you free.
I enjoyed the program, but at the same time, I was disappointed with it. I had previously seen previews for it and it looked scary. I had psyched myself up for a scary movie and it was scary at all. None of the scenes even made me jump. I agree with the programs dominant and alternative messages strongly. Being honest is key to having living a happy life.
It also teaches people to look beyond someone's outward appearance, which I believe is very important because so many people can be manipulative. Finch may have appeared to have it all together, but he was a psychopath. At the beginning, Dormer actually fell into Finch's trap and believed his constant lies, but in the end he realized one had to look deeper than someone's outward image. Special effects were used frequently in the film, especially in scenes containing dead bodies. When the victim's dead body was shown, she actually appeared dead.
The film did an excellent job of making her up so that she seemed like a rotting body. In the scene where Dormer was chasing Finch, special effects were used for fog. I assume they used was fog machine to do so. Twice throughout the movie they showed a rotting dog. The use of fake blood looked so real, it was amazing. In the beginning of the film there was an extreme close-up done of a white shirt with blood soaking through it.
It was so well done that I knew immediately was they were trying to portray. When Dormer and his partner arrived in Alaska an establishing shot was used to allow us to see where the movie took place. There were many close-up shots, especially of the main characters. This allowed us to see their facial expressions quite well and gave us an understanding of their feelings. I believe a lot of close-ups were used on Dormer to show us the lines on his face and make us realize how tired he was. When the scene focused on Dormer, the shots were low angle.
This gave him a look of power since he was in the control of situation involving the murder of the young girl. At one point the viewers were able to see the world through Dormer's eyes after he hasn't slept for days. The camera was blurry and shaky and everything said had an echo to it. The songs in the film had no words to them and were very high pitched and creepy. There was a lot of use of violins. This created suspense for the audience.
I noticed the use of color was very bland and mellow. There were no vivid or exciting colors, perhaps because the movie itself was not positive. The setting of the movie revolved around the title "insomnia". It was in Alaska at a period of time when it was light outside twenty-four hours a day. Sleep is not usually associated with light and that's why it was light outside when Dormer experienced his insomnia. There were many scenes and flashbacks associated with the beach and the fog.
I believe they used the fog so much to symbolize a dream-like world. It seemed as if Dormer's life was a dream due to his lack of sleep. I noticed that the main character's name was Dormer. In French, the word sleep is "dormer". His name may have been Dormer because of that association.
At the end of the movie, Dormer and Finch were battling and they both ended up shooting one another at the same time. This symbolized they in a way, they were both the same because they had both killed someone. Finch ended up dying first, which symbolized that he was guilty of murder and killing that young girl was not a mistake. Dormer died last, which symbolized his innocence, that he did purposely kill his partner. In general, I really enjoyed the movie. I had fun trying to figure out all the hidden symbols and trying to figure out what was going to happen next.
I would definitely recommend it!
