Dormitory In The University example essay topic

851 words
It is actually an interesting question whether there should be a dormitory in a university or not. In order to get deeper in the issue we should understand first what the main purposes of the dormitory are. The answer may be quite simple providing the living for students, however if to look from a balanced point of view we can find out that there are some pros and contras of having dormitory in the university and what negative or positive impacts building the dormitory can make. First, the dormitory is the place where students can live.

Some students simply do not have sufficient funds to rent an apartment for several years of attending college and the dormitory will be a best solution available to solve their financial problems. Others just do not want to pay more if there is an opportunity to live close to the school they are attending, which is certainly beneficial for all the students. In some areas, the cost for renting an apartment can be even cheaper than paying for a room in the university, but in many cases, universities are located in the areas with dense population, where the cost of living is high. If there would not be dormitories, students would have to look for an apartment that will cost less, and there is a big possibility that it will be located far from school, which is the place where students are supposed to spend almost entire day for studying. Besides, students will not have unwanted expenditures for the transportation.

I had just listed the reasons why it would be economically beneficial for students to live in dormitories; however, money is not the single determinant in this case. Just have a look on the movies about college life. The setting is dormitories, which does not mean that I am saying that everything should be done like in movies, rather opposite movies depict a traditional atmosphere of a university. Many people had gone through life in dorms and they advise to settle and live in dorms as something a regular person should try. Simply it will be ultimate college experience. Board of educators may believe that this college experience can result into negative consequences (I guess you understand that concentration of young and energetic individuals can cause various problems).

This is probably the only one negative aspect of having dormitory. Indeed, proper organization of campus life together with campus security will deal with this. There is absolutely no doubt that people socialize while living in a group. This provides them with good communication skills and constant interaction with people broadens areas of knowledge and helps to build good relationships.

The availability of dormitories in the university can attract more students from other places (even from different countries) to attend this particular school, which will make areas of interests in the university more diverse and the social atmosphere more balanced. Students will have a great opportunity to meet people who share common interests and beliefs. The cases when individuals made a lifetime friends while living together are numerous. It is also vital for a student to have good communication skills and not to be afraid of people, because future career greatly depends on the ability to interact successfully with people, which is the key element of teamwork and of establishment of healthy atmosphere at the workplace. Such skills cannot be obtained in class or in a private apartment. Moreover, if there a student might have some difficulties in education friends can always help him to solve the problem.

Certainly I do not want you to understand my words in the way that helping a friend with education will automatically mean cheating, because I try too look on the issue from positive persons point of view, besides, the cheater can always find the ways to pursue his devious thing. Living in dormitories that are equipped with some kind of special installation aimed to provide conveniences for students in their educational process can be both comfortable and useful. A good example can be dormitories for students of computer faculty that usually have fast-speed internet connection. It will positively reflect on the overall level of education and will allow students to grasp a subject better.

It is obvious that building a dormitory will have a positive impact on the well-being of students, and if a person does not have to take care of problems that have nothing to do with education it will be possible to spend more time studying. This will result into better performance, which will be good for students as well for the university. Besides, building dormitory will expand the university and will raise its status. Therefore, it is necessary for the university to have dormitories to meet students needs, and if the university does not have dormitories, it is already time to think about building them.
