Martin Luther King's wisdom, words, action, commitment, and his dream of new way of life are tangled with the American experience. Possibly one of the most well known civil rights activities took place in August of 1963.
King along with Civil rights leaders from across the country organized a march in Washington DC. The event was titled the March on Washington. It was used to encourage congress to pass the bill that president Kennedy had created. Many whites along with about 200,000 blacks gathered at the base of the Lincoln Memorial where Martin Luther King Jr. presented his best known speech. Entitled "I had a dream", King's speech defined the moral basis behind the civil rights movement. The march won major victory in congress by 1964 when congress proceeded to pass the civil rights bill that Kennedy had created, before his death.
The civil rights act of 1964 was created and prohibited racial discrimination in public places and called for equal opportunity in employment and education for African Americans. Throughout his life, King played a vital role in achieving significant gains for humanity, from the desegregation of schools and other public facilities, to the acceleration of civil rights as a government priority, his peace mission was a great success. In 1964, at the young age of 35, King was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his accomplishments. King's legacy offers hope that someday racism might be replaced with love and respect for human rights.
