Driving Of Other People example essay topic

774 words
Driving in today's society has become increasingly dangerous. There are so many things that can happen. Whether its inclement weather or other drivers, driving has its difficulties. The worst part though is other drivers. You never know what to expect' or what other drivers will do. Many of today's drivers have dangerous habits.

When I first received my driver's license I was talking to my mother about driving. We were talking about when and where I was aloud to drive. I told her that driving was easy so that there shouldn't be any limitations on my driving. My mother said driving is easy, but it's not your driving that I'm worried about. It's the driving of other people out there that I'm worried about. At first I didn't understand how she could be worried about other people when it was me driving.

I would understand soon enough though once I got out on the road. At first I didn't have any trouble driving at all. No tickets and no accidents. Things seemed to be going pretty well, although I still didn't understand what my mother was talking about. Finally something happened that made me realize that it really isn't you most of the time but some other driver that has no idea what they are doing that causes accidents or near accidents. I was on my way to my friend's college with another good friend of mine.

We were headed out route 70 towards Hagerstown. We weren't really doing anything just talking while we were on our way. I noticed a silver car in the left lane and a red SUV in the right lane directly in front of us. The silver car tried to change lanes into our lane but did not see the red SUV in its path.

The silver car saw the SUV at the last second and swerved to try to avoid a collision. He lost control of the car and began to fishtail wildly all over the road. My friend and I slowed in our vehicle, captivated by the scene. The silver car continued to fishtail wildly and then it made a beeline for the guardrail on our side of the highway.

The car slammed into the guardrail head on. We swerved between the car and the guardrail on the shoulder to avoid hitting the car. We slowed down on the shoulder and looked back at the car. We decided to see if the driver of the car was ok. Just as I started to get out of the car I looked back to where the car was sitting in the right lane of the highway.

I saw headlights of an eighteen-wheeler. A tractor-trailer slammed into the car lifting it up onto two wheels and throwing it over a cliff of sorts on the left side of the road. We sat there in shock for several minutes. I had never seen anything like this before. I was still shaking from almost being involved in that accident. If we had not been able to get around the silver car then the truck would have hit us instead of the car that it did.

That was definitely a sobering though. As we drove the rest of the way we talked about how other drivers dangerous habits and maneuvers can result in tragedy while driving. I personally think that some people need to be tested different ways before receiving a driver's license because some people have no right operating a motor vehicle with the ways that they drive. It's all too often that I see someone cut either myself or another motorist off without even bothering to look or signal. Or I will be following someone onto the highway and they will come to a complete stop on a merge ramp. It's a wonder more people don't become involved in accidents the way some people drive today.

It took me about three years to fully understand about what my mother said about driving. It really isn't about you when you " re out there or how you " re driving. It's about that guy next to you or that lady behind you. You never know what they are going to do or what their habits are. The only thing you can thing about is that many of today's drivers have dangerous habits so drive defensively..
