I took my first interest in author and professor Sut Jhally, after I saw him do an interview on television. In just hearing him speak I immediately began making connections with some of my own ideas and those we " ve studied in learning how to "re-think" America. Upon further research and a visit to Sut Jhally's website (web) I learned that his lectures and materials are well founded with the likes and interests of other prominent modern day socio-political thinkers such as Bill Maher, Micheal Moore, Jackson Katz and others. After browsing through certain articles such as "Manhood and the Matt" and "Advertising at the Edge of the Apocalypse", I found a strong correlation. It is the purpose of this essay to explore the effects of our economic agenda with that of our national culture. As far as culture goes, anyone can claim ties to their race or background and other institutions but if there's one universal consideration in America, it is the culture of money that pre-dominantly dictates its people foremost.

Our Capitalist economy has become one of the strongest in the world despite rising problems in the environment and the beginning of a collapse within our social nature It is my contention based on Jhally's documented works and other ideas we " re read our course, that we have become a nation where "social progress " and culture itself takes the backseat consumerism. To even approach this concept with serious perspective raises many questions about our current state as a nation. What are the general results of advertising on any culture and why is it necessarily negative? In an interview posted on SutJhalley. com he addresses this point specifically as in clip from his Documentary: "Advertising and the End of the World".

In this clip he states references to another book entitled "The Capitalist Threat" by a Billionaire turned philanthropist named George Soros. The book bases many social problems that occur nationally on capitalism itself for promoting a very short term lifestyle where responsibility is compromised for more material needs. Thus, Jhally piggy backs on this inference by calling Advertising itself as "the voice of capitalism" which is the major catalyst "threatening" our social progress and therefore our survival. In the aforementioned article Co-written by Jhally and Jackson Katz entitled, "Advertising at the Edge of the Apocalypse", they write: .".. capitalism is truly a revolutionary society, dramatically altering the very landscape of social life, in a way no other form of social organization had been able to achieve in such a short period of time". By this standpoint, the effect of capitalism on social progress is put into question but more importantly, how is that social progress vital for our survival? Why can't the advertising world co-exist with our communal nature?
