Effective Delegation Managing people effectively is one of the major challenges facing organizations today. Effective managers should be able to clearly define his / her role within an organization. Managers need to make appropriate decisions, delegate tasks, empower people, manage conflict well and LISTEN. Managers need to identify specific skills for being effective within the organization.
In this paper I will cover what skills are necessary for effective delegation as a manager and how a manger can effectively delegate tasks. Delegation will always be one of the most important management skills - and one of the easiest to get wrong. Good delegation saves you time, develops you people, grooms a successor, and motivates. Too often managers delegate the 'wrong' activities. Too often managers have no interest in what they delegate and thereby lose control over the process or function that they are accountable for. If the manager is truly accountable for the outcome of others activities, then due care must be taken in how, what, and why activities, projects, processes, or functions are assigned.
Successful Delegation Delegation is the skill that you must acquire to manage your work, and to ensure that it is successfully delivered. It is also a skill you can use to bring other people's expertise to bear in your work, particularly in areas where you do not have the skills or the temperament to do the best possible job. The transfer of responsibility involved with delegation develops your staff, and can increase their enjoyment of their roles. To be successful, you need to demonstrate the vision to understand broad goals and objectives for the team and then determine what it will take to get there. This will most often involve relinquishing specific tasks and responsibilities to others so you can spend more time managing team members, enriching their skills and keeping morale high. Delegation is much more than a nice thing to do-it is an essential thing to do.
Delegation and Controlling The delegation process at the corporation that I work for is as follows: The Chief executive officer also known as the "CEO" decides what he wants to see happen. Then he communicates this information to the Vice President of Operations who passes this information to the Human Resource department who then contacts our upper Management in I.T. know as the "Information Technology Leadership Team" who communicates all delegated tasks from the top down to their teams. A simple way for the CEO to have control over this delegation process is by using a tool known as SMART. It's a quick checklist for proper delegation. Delegated tasks must be Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic, and Time bound. (web) If you can't check these points don't delegate it.
Summary To be an effective manager, you must learn to use delegation as a way to increase the knowledge and skills of staff members while freeing up your time to focus on management. Delegation can be time consuming and distracting, especially if employees lack experience with what they are being asked to do. The commitment to using delegation as a management tool requires patience and the willingness to work through problems that will undoubtedly occur.
