Which one to use would depend on many factors such as the objectives of the organization, size, and location. It would also depend also the characteristics of the audience and the organization's budget. Some examples of effective PR strategies include: Publicity Publicity can be in the form of various media methods: news releases, media advisors, press conferences, tours and letters to reporters. Special Events Special events can be an affective way to draw attention to an organization by bringing people to your place of business or bringing your business to another location.
Some examples of special events are fund raisers, open houses, award ceremonies, and speeches. Newsletters These are publications that are intended to keep people such as customers, clients, investors, etc up to date on the organization. It can also be informative and offer advice. Letters to the Press This could be to alert the media of an upcoming event or to respond to speculation. Being respectful and having a good repair with the media is always an added bonus.
Charitable Contributions Usually a donation has to be very sizable to make the news, however consistency to make a commitment to give back to the community by supporting charities will also go a long way in enhancing an organization's image. Sponsorships Companies that don't wish to create an event, can sponsor someone else. Many do this by sponsoring a sport, musical group, or theatre. The effectiveness of this comes from the advertisement. Such advertisement can be in the form of banners, signs, uniforms, posters, programs, etc. Thank You Letters Thanking customers and associates for their business, may encourage repeated business and often times, referrals for new business.
Examples of Public relations Anti-abortion activists Anti-abortion activists have had to revamp their image in the aftermath of attacks on two abortion clinics. John C. Salvi was sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing two people in a rifle shooting rampage in December of 1994. The trial portrayed Mr Salvi as a terrorist that represented anti-abortion causes. During the trial, he showed no remorse for the deaths nor for those innocent bystanders. To him, he was acting out a noble cause. Now, the public affiliates this movement as violent and hostile.
Because of the often angry protests with picketers at the abortion clinics, many feel this action is creating and condoning vigilantes like Mr. Salvi. Because of this situation, it's given the pro-life cause a bad name. This is not what the movement is all about. "It's a sad moment, because that was not a pro-life action", (Kris i Hamrick). The group feels that much of the real blame can be directed towards the news media that gives very discrimitiave coverage. Every story you read, gives the reader then conclusion that pro-life is assumed to be a negative movement.
However, opposite is really the case. If anything, the cause is to promote human life and not destroy it. They disassociate themselves with this act of violence. Even evidence at Salvi's trial showed that he did not belong to any activist group or association. However, this tragic event has given the pro-choice acitvists the ammunition needed to induce the public to perceive them as nothing more than terrorists instead of right to all life activists in which they really are. Solutions From my perception of what happened and from my PR readings, I believe that this organization should have been out in the open right away denying any association with Mr. Salvi.
I think trying to put out fires after the damage is done is more harmful than just dealing with anticipated bad publicity. They could have possibly showed more compassion or showed their support by raising money for the families of the deceased and denouncing all acts of violence. They needed to make a stand ASAP and gain the public's trust or at least their respect. Sometimes, I think by doing nothing, the public may perceive this as the act was accepted by the party. I believe more should have been done to show that there wasn't any association to these crimes and acts of violence. Eminem Detroit Rap singer Eminem was plagued with bad publicity a few years back for some strong words he spoke in some of his lyrics.
The Marshall Mathers LP came under fire from women's groups and gay-rights activists. The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NAR AS) received thousands of email and phone calls from people complaining against Eminem's focus on violent, homophobic, and misogynistic references on his album. USA Today describes the singer as being a public relations "mother lode and menace". He brings both talent and disgrace to the industry. When he performed at the music awards, there were protestors to be seen for miles. Mostly gay rights activists.
They were outraged by the fact that the young artist was being nominated by for an award. Was it just a publicity stunt to get attention? Possibly so. Little was known about Marshall Mathers until he received such negative publicity.
This publicity most likely sparked a lot of curiousity from individual that probably wouldn't have paid much attention to him much less listen to his lyrics. This kind of publicity is probalby why millions of kids love him, parents hate him, and critics condemn him. Most kids think it's just funny. They don't take it seriously and the attention he's getting is brought on by all the hype from those who hate him. They are just making him a richer young man.
In Eminem's own words, "No publicity is bad publicity". Reputation Now that the rapper is known everywhere, it appears that he is trying to un tarnish the his image and gain respect. He started by singing a duet with Singer Elton John. This was a step to tell the public that he didn't hate homosexual. He also gave interviews and came off as a very intelligent and "normal" individual. People that live near the singer calm that he is a devoted dad and down to earth neighbor that appears at times to be quite shy.
They do not associate him with his bad boy image that he is famous for. His neighbors consist of wealthy doctors and business men. They all say that he fits in very well. He keeps his property immaculate and there is little or no disturbances. His next door neighbor perceives him as being a very good father and a nice person. A 57- year old neighbor in the Manchester Estates describes him as being "a little timid", says Dave Corey.

I do think that if it wasn't for the negative publicity, he would not have come as far as he has today. In cases like this one, negative publicity does more good than harm.
However, to stay on top, he will need talent. Otherwise, he's a very rich man now and can just retire comfortably. Conclusion PR comes in many forms. Good public relations can make an organization / individual and bad PR can destroy it. This can also be the case in the opposite sense as in the Eminem scenario. Which PR depends on the situation and the audience.
But it is necessary either way.
