It is a novel in which the characters learn about themselves and change the first impressions they have formed about each other and the world around them. It is about conquering obstacles and achieving romantic happiness, Darcy being too proud, and being prejudiced about where Elizabeth comes from and Elizabeth thinks Darcy is arrogant and self-centred. Both are forced to come to grips with their own mistakes on their views about each other and finally finding the ability to view the other through unprejudiced eyes. Pride is a feeling of satisfaction that you have because you or people close to you have done something good or possess something good and prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things. 3) The change is caused when Elizabeth receives a letter from Darcy explaining his actions and attempts to answer Elizabeth's attacks on his behaviour.

He also gives his side of the story of Wickham, and his side on why he kept his best friend from making a mistake on marring Elizabeth's sister Jane and he apologise's for this, Darcy also tells her that his cousin will confirm his story. Elizabeth is then forced by Darcy's letter to rethink her views on Darcy that she misjudged him and that her own pride and vanity were the cause of most misunderstandings. She also now begins to see her family in a different way and accepts their faults. She learns more about herself. 4) "My dear Miss Eliza, why are not you dancing?

"Mr Darcy, you must allow me to present this young lady to you as a very desirable partner. - You cannot refuse to dance, I am sure, when so much beauty is before you". And taking her hand, he would have given it to Mr Darcy, who, though extremely surprised, was not unwilling to receive it, when she instantly drew back, and said with some discomposure to sir William, "indeed, Sir, I have not the least intention of dancing. -I entreat you not to suppose that I moved this way in order to beg for a partner".

Mr Darcy with grave propriety requested to be allowed the honour of her hand; but in vain. Elizabeth was determined: nor did Sir William at all shake her purpose by his attempt at persuasion. In this paragraph Elizabeth proudly refuses Darcy's offer to dance. I choose this paragraph as it shows what Elizabeth's first impression of Darcy is. It is made clear in the story that she accepts nothing from him not even a dance. It shows me how head strong she is and how true she is to herself and not giving in just for the sake of other people being present and not giving into the fact that ladies are expected to behave in a certain way.

It shows me what a strong character she is and what she stands and fights for. She sticks to her goals. I admire a woman who doesn't let anyone determine what she has to do she shows that a woman can think for herself. 5) The discovery I made was that women in the story are expected to behave in a certain way, a woman's reputation is of the utmost importance in the society sketched in the story. Elizabeth was not good enough because of the lack of wealth in the family and lack of family connections. The enlightenment was the fact that against all of those odds Elizabeth was able to show her true self with her own thoughts and gestures and that she stayed true to herself no matter what.

She was honest even when she viewed things the wrong way or saw things differently; she was able to admit this. It affirmed my views on the fact "always be true to yourself no matter what others say or do". What I got out of reading this book is that I got an inside view on what life was like in those days even though the story was fictional. It also showed that you can change your attitude and ideas towards people or subjects, in other words your ideas can reform themselves. You " re never too old to learn. 6) The two main characters could not be friends of mine as I find them to have old-fashioned ideas in which I believe that there would be too many conflicts.

As a women in the year 2003 I believe that a woman role in society is just as big as a mans role in society and I do not feel that I could except the fact that in the story the male roles inherit most of the land, money and titles just because he is a male and if women want to make something of themselves in the story they would do good as to marry someone with money and status.
