There are four elements that I will discuss while writing this paper. These four elements will describe the hero's plot. The two movies that I will apply these elements to are Unforgiven and Being There. The first element that I will discuss is origin.

Origin is the starting point of the movie. It is who the character is at the time you meet him. In the movie Unforgiven, the main character is a man named William Munny. When we first see William Munny, he is on a small farm with his two children. He is not very wealthy and is working in the pigpen. His wife had died a couple of years ago and he is left to take care of a farm and his two children.

In the movie Being There, the main character is a man named Chance the Gardner. When the audience first meets Chance, he is sitting on his bed watching television. Chance is a mentally challenged man. A black maid named Louise comes in and tells Chance that the old man has passed away. Louise is very upset and Chance does not show any kind of emotion.

This is how both characters in the two movies are introduced to the audience. The second element, which is important, is the back story. The back story is the unseen but understood theme behind the movie. It is the meaning of the movie in a whole.

William Munny's background is introduced at the beginning of the movie. They portray him as an assassin and a die-hard cowboy. He murdered women and children and was the most feared man in Wyoming. Since then he has changed his life. After getting married to his wife he quit drinking and killing and tried to better his life. Chance the Gardner is described as being the caretaker of the garden.

He lived with and old man who owns a very large estate. They suggest that he was taken into the house at a very young age. Being the gardener, this was the only life he knew. The third element is development. Development is the changes and challenges that the character faces. One of the challenges that William Munny faces is when a young man comes to Munny's farm and asks Munny to join him in killing two men that sliced a prostitutes face.

He says that he will give Munny five hundred dollars if he helped him kill these two men. At this point Munny has two choices; he could kill these two men and receive five hundred dollars, or not kill anyone and be poor. This is very tough decision. If he kills the two men he will be able to give his children and himself a better life, but he will be going back to his old ways which he promised he would never do again. If he stays and does not take the young man up on his offer, he will be struggling like he has been for so many years.

Chance also faces a very big challenge. Now that the old man has passed away he has no place to go. The real estate agents have come to take over the house. Chance is not an intelligent man and can not read or write. The only thing that he knows is how to take care of a garden. How is he going to make it in the world without the basic skills that a person needs to survive?

He is lost and does not understand that he has to leave everything he is used to and try to make it on his own. The last element is discovery. The moment of discovery is when the hero himself makes a discovery about his life. It is crucial to the rest of the movie. After Munny agrees to the idea that he will kill these two men for five hundred dollars, he asks his old partner Ned to tag along and help. Munny has killed the first man and Ned realizes that he does not want any part in it.

He does not want to go back to his old ways. Munny and the "kid" continue on their journey and Ned heads back home. The "kid" finds the second man and kills him. Now they are meeting the other prostitutes to obtain their reward.

One of the prostitutes informs Munny that the sheriff, also known as "Little Bill", has found Ned and beat him to death. William Munny then decides to take a drink of whiskey and go after "Little Bill" and kill him for what he has done to Ned. I feel that his discovery is when he realizes that in order for justice he must go against his promise and become the man that he once was. Chance meets a family and they decide to take him in and make use of his ability.

They do not realize that he is a simple man, but think that he is very intelligent in his own way. He becomes Chauncy Gardner. He becomes very well known and famous. He meets the president and has regular meetings with well-known men from around the country. The wife of the old man that he now lives with has feelings for Chauncy and escorts him to many gatherings because her elderly husband is too ill to attend.

At the end of the movie the old man asks Chauncy to take care of his estate and his wife before he dies. Chauncy is seen at the funeral picking weeds and walking in the pond. I do not know for sure if there was a discovery made by this character. The discovery could be that Chauncy realizes that he now has responsibilities like everybody else and that he must take care of himself.

Both movies are very different from each other. Unforgiven is a western with a very dark and gloomy setting while Being There is a funny, less serious comedy. By applying these elements to each movie I have found it easier to understand the movies in a whole..
