Extract From web In 1871 on the 26th of January the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed at the Pall Mall Restaurant. Since then the RFU has been working for the game of Rugby. It is the governing body for England.
It has a membership of around 2000 clubs, 27 counties, the armed forces and Oxford and Cambridge universities. Every year over 200,000 games are played under the backing of the RFU and the union also has a financial commitment to 8,000 mini rugby sides allocated around the country. There are also around 3,000 schools affiliated to the England rugby schools union. Plus the Rugby football union annually invests lb 1.6 million in youth development schemes. The RFU are the founders of the Five Nations Cup which is now known as the Six Nations with the recent joining of Italy. Since then the RFU has set up international matches home and away in the southern hemisphere giving England the experience they need to win the Rugby world Cup!
Over the last two decades the RFU's aim has been to create a strong, lively club structure with the club competitions to support it. The RFU runs an all-inclusive insurance scheme making sure that all its registered clubs and schools are fully supported. This covers referees, touch judges and officials and protects over 500,000 players every week. The scheme provides accidental death and disability cover up to lb 250,000 across all levels from player to sponge man when taking part in a rugby-related event such as coaching, training, recruitment or travel. The RFU has set new standards of refereeing at every level to help encourage an unbiased enjoyable game at all ages and levels. The RFU has set up many Charities to look after players within the sport and which will cover all aspects of the game from injuries to youth development.
