This story takes place in June of 1943. For two years the voi lent Nazi armies have occupied the Polish town of Bed zin. Twelve-year-old Eva, who is the main character, along with her father and sister, have been forced to leave their comfortable home and move in a tiny attic in the awful and dangerous Jewish ghetto. Eva's life takes an even more terrifying turn when she and her sister are torn from their father and imprisoned in a Nazi work camp in in Czechoslovakia. In the camp, Eva is forced to spin mounds and mounds of thread on treacherous machinery to make blankets and uniforms for the German army. As she struggles amidst ever-worsening dangers to save her life and that of her sick sister, Eva's world tears apart like the weak threads on her spinning machine.
