Every Rocky Movie example essay topic
Whether it is the character growth and development, the plot of the movies, Rocky's physique, the fighting sequences, or training scenes, Rocky II and Rocky are very different movies. The character development from Rocky II to Rocky is what makes the movies drastically different. At the beginning of Rocky II, Rocky is in the hospital recovering from the beating he took in the first movie. When Rocky gets out, he is even dumber than when he went in, and if you have seen the first Rocky, that means he is really dumb.
Rocky becomes very famous because he is the only fighter to go the full fifteen rounds against Apollo Creed and still be standing at the end of the fight. Due to his success against Creed, Rocky gets to be in commercials. This is a dumb move for Rocky because he is so illiterate he can't even read the cue cards. Later on in Rocky II when he finally learns to read, his is still as dumb as a box of rocks.
He also still has the vocabulary of a four year old kid. For example, when he asks Adrian to marry him, he says, "He Yo Adrian, I was just wandering if you know if maybe you wouldn't mind marrying me too much?" If that isn't bad English, than there is no such thing. Rocky also still wears the same exact clothes he wears in the first movie. All black, including a black hat and black gloves with the fingers cut off of them. In Rocky, Rocky becomes much smarter and a lot more sophisticated. He abandons the all black wardrobe, and goes with the big time business man suit.
His English is still a kind of bad, but a lot better than it was in Rocky II. You can tell when his friend Paulie is upset about something and Rocky says, "He yo paulie, don't get mentally irregular ok!" The Rocky from Rocky II would " ve have never been able to say that. As Rocky's character grows in these movies, so do the characters that are closest to him. In Rocky II, Adrian, his wife, hates that Rocky fights because she knows how dumb he is already, and doesn't want him to take anymore shots to the head. But after they spend all their money, she realizes that Rocky fighting is the only way they can have money to live off of. In Rocky, she loves to watch Rocky fight because she sees how much joy it brings him.
Apollo Creed's character also grows from movie to movie. In Rocky II, he wants to fight Rocky to prove that he can beat him, and to prove that the first fight was a fluke. In Rocky, after Rocky loses to Clubber Lang, Apollo helps train Rocky to beat Clubber Lang. Apollo discovers Lang's weakness, and decides to let Rocky know what it is. Rocky wins the fight against Lang, and they go on to become good friends in the rest of the movies.
The plot of the two movies is also totally different. In Rocky II, Rocky and Adrian finally get married. Adrian doesn't think it is safe for Rocky to fight anymore due to the damage to his face, so Rocky retires from fighting. Rocky then starts to look for another career. In the meantime, Rocky and Adrian buy a house and move in together. Adrian also finds out she is pregnant, so the pressure on Rocky to find a job to support the family increases.
After failing in his attempts to find a new career, Rocky thinks about giving boxing a shot again. Adrian, however, disapproves of this idea. Finally, after over a month of constantly being harassed by Apollo Creed for a rematch, Rocky decides to come out of retirement for a rematch with Creed. He knows that to beat him this time, he is going to have to train even harder and smarter than before.
Mickey, his trainer, teaches him to fight right handed so he can protect his injured eye. He knows that Creed wis expecting Rocky to fight with his normal southpaw style, and that fighting right handed will throw Apollo off. After rigorous training for three months, Rocky is ready to fight Creed. Rocky shocks Creed by fighting right handed for the first fourteen rounds. Rocky then switches back to southpaw for the last round, and knocks Apollo out to become heavyweight champion of the world. Rocky starts out with Rocky already the champ, and defending his title ten times, all resulting in wins.
Then a cocky, big mouthed opponent named Clubber Lang, comes out of nowhere and wants to fight Rocky. After Clubber constantly badgers Rocky, Rocky says he will defend his title against Lang. Rocky trains very nonchalantly, and doesn't take Lang seriously. When the fight comes, it is over almost as quickly as it starts. Rocky gets knocked out in the second round by Lang. During the fight, Mickey, his long time trainer, dies of a heart attack.
Rocky wants a rematch, but he thinks without Mickey he can't win. After the fight, Apollo comes to Rocky and says he knows how to beat Clubber Lang, who by now everyone thinks is invincible for knocking Rocky out. Apollo realizes for Rocky to win, he has to teach Rocky to fight like a colored fighter. He teaches him how to dance around and avoid punches, instead of just taking every punch to the head.
He realizes that dancing and avoiding punches will make Lang tired. Then after he gets tired, Rocky can finish him off. So, after an emotional speech from Adrian to help give Rocky confidence, and with Apollo pushing him every step of the way, Rocky realizes he can do it. He trains harder than he has ever trained before to win. When the fight comes, he dances circles around Clubber Lang. Rocky tires him out for two rounds, before finally knocking him out in the third round to regain his heavy weight title.
Last, but certainly not least, are the training scenes. In Rocky II, Rocky does the same training regimen as he does in Rocky one. He trains in Philadelphia at Mighty Mick's Gym. He does the usual sit-ups, push-ups, and lifting weights. He also boxes his trainers to show he is ready. Then, with the Rocky theme song blaring in the background, he makes his made dash up the famous Philadelphia Art Museum steps to the top, and throws his hands in the air in rejoice showing he is ready for the showdown.
In Rocky, Apollo takes Rocky to San Francisco where Apollo first started so Rocky could learn to fight like a colored fighter. Apollo thought being around other colored fighters would help him learn to get the rhythm and footwork so Rocky could be the champion again. At first, he does all the fast footwork skills like sprints, jump roping, and dancing to the infamous eighty's smash hit, "Eye of the Tiger". When it all comes down to it, Rocky gets his swagger back by training to the Rocky theme song. Only this time all of his exercises take place on the beach in San Francisco. There are no steps to run up on the beach, so he has to think of something else.
At the end of the training scene, Rocky races Apollo on the beach in a one-hundred yard sprint. With the Rocky music playing full blast in the background, Rocky just barley edges out Apollo to show he has what it takes to beat a colored fighter. There are other little differences between Rocky II and Rocky. Rocky II only grossed 71.5 million at the box office, while Rocky grossed 122.7 million at the box office. Sylvester Stallone is a lot stronger and muscular in Rocky than in Rocky II. Also, Rocky II only costs 3.4 million dollars to make.
Rocky costs a little over 16 million dollars to make. Stallone was paid 7 million just play Rocky in Rocky. In Rocky II, has was paid $125,000, and received 35% of the profits the movie made. Finally, Rocky was filmed entirely in San Francisco, while Rocky II was filmed entirely in Philadelphia.
Hope by reading this paper, the drastic differences between the two movies are clearer. Rocky II was made solely to win awards and be labeled as a great sequel to one of the greatest movies ever made. Rocky was made to be more of an action type movie, and appeal to everyone of all ages, and not just to people who liked the first Rocky. It was also given a lot more hype before it came out.
That explains the differences in the box office numbers that were pointed out earlier in the paper. Most people's favorite out of the whole series is Rocky. As a matter of fact, if you ask most people who have seen the Rocky movies what their favorite Rocky movie is, they will say the one with Mr. T. He plays Clubber Lang, Rocky's opponent, in Rocky. Reading this paper should help show not every Rocky movie is the same. If the differences mentioned in this paper are not that clear, rent all five Rocky movies and experience the differences first hand. 1.
