Tabatha Booker April 4, 2001 Period 1 English The United States Congress is the oldest democratic legislature in the world. The Legislative Branch has been in operation every since the late 1700's. This branch is the most influential Legislative Branch in the world. Congress makes decisions that affect not only the U.S., but also economics and security of many other nations. Congress is a democratic body because its members are elected by and represent the American people. Members of Congress meet, debate, and vote on issues that affect both their constituents' local interests and the interest of the nation as one.

The idea of representative government that so inspired the United States founders came from the English political tradition, which was it indirectly. Functions: Congress like the other two branches of the government, the President and Supreme Court wield much power. One of the greatest strengths of representative democracy is that the people, if displease with their legislators they can vote in the office on the election. Legislation means the preparation and enactment of laws or the laws themselves. Legislator is a body of persons authorized to makes laws for a country or state (from legislator proposed of a law.) Members of the legislative represent the people in exacting laws, levying taxes and in exercising general super vision over the government, A few legislatures are unicameral. (With one house or chamber), but most are bicameral (two houses).

The lower house is usually the more representative of the people and its members are nearly always affected. Membership in the upper house often comes through heredity, appointment or indirect election. The United States legislature includes the national congress and the legislative bodies of 50 states. Nebraska is the only state with a unicameral legislative. In most states the official name is legislature other names being General Assembly. In every state the upper house is called senate.

The lower house is usually called the House of Representative; other names are house on Delegates, Assembly, and General Assembly. States legislatures are not limited to certain enumerated powers, as is the congress of the United States, but may legislate on any matter not prohibited to them by the U.S. Constitution or by the State Constitution.
