The word conflict can be defined as a disagreement, battle, or to be at odds with something. Conflicts occur both internally and externally. Some we can control while others we wish we could". Life is a never ending series of conflicts and struggle". Throughout life we see examples of this both in our personal lives and in the media. Every great song a problem within it.

The most popular theme written about is love. Love is also a popular struggle for the main character in literature, plays, and movies. This however is not the only problem discussed in the media. Many others include war, family and friends, career, and internal struggles. Singers and songwriters make their money off of problems. Some of the songs will sing about how wonderful love of is while others condemn it.

An example of the hatred towards love would be Ani Difranco's Untouchable Face. She in the song struggles in finding peace in her new single status and forgiving her boyfriend for leaving her. This song has two major conflicts within it. Those are man vs. man and man vs. himself. Love is not the only theme in music. War is another popular topic and is an example of how we as human beings are always struggling.

In Bob Dylan's Blown' In the Wind he questions the Vietnam War. He struggles to understand its necessity. This song was written during the height of the hippie movement. Each of the above artists have written many songs after the ones listed were published. The newer songs deal with their current issues that they are facing and can be used as evidence proving the never ending series of struggles. Literature and plays also have numerous examples proving this theory.

One example would be William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Within every scene the young couple is plagued with another problem until it eventually drives them to death by suicide. Their love for one and other is at the heart of all the problems. The two young teens are born to families with proud backgrounds and a passionate hatred towards the other. The love for one and other drives them to do crazy things for the other which in the end of the play has Romeo banished and Juliet "sleeping but dead to the world". The novel A Separate Peace by Jonathan Knowles trouble never seems to seize for the main character Gene.

His jealousy of his best friend, Finny, leads him to be responsible for the accident that leaves Finny crippled and eventually causes his death. After Finny's death Gene is still not free from his problem. Now he faced with the guilt of killing his best friend for the rest of his life. So our actions early on in life determine how we will feel later on in life. By stating this one can now say that early decisions can affect the future problems to come. Movies are always full of conflicts and these are what causes us to watch.

We can relate to the situations the main characters go through. One movie that have every type of conflict would be Forest Gump. It deals with Man vs. Nature while fishing for shrimp, the weather in Vietnam, and when his mother and wife, Jenny, dies. Man vs. Himself occurs when Forest has to deal with the aftermath of his mother's death, raising his son alone, and dealing with an unrequited love. Man vs. Man occurs when he plays football in college and fights in Vietnam.

In this movie we view the life of man who views himself just as an average man. However when he begins to tell of his life's events the audience then discovers this is no ordinary face in the crowd. This man has faced tragedy. He has fought in war, dealt with the death of his parent, and has had unrequited love. His life would be the shining example of never ending struggles. Every time things seem to be going good another conflict comes into play.

In the end of the movie after his true love dies he is now left to raise a son all alone. Conflict is never too far behind in this man's life. Even as he ages the problems never stop mounting. Just because one is faced with a never ending stream of problems it does not mean that they are unhappy. As people we learn how and what to react to.

This is part of growing up. We see examples of the never ending conflicts that will or faced us in all forms of the media. Some conflicts we have very limited control over such as our health while other are in our complete control. We need to find the delicate balance in our reaction to our problems.
