IT'S UP TO YOU, NEW YORK New York, New York says Frank Sinatra. There must be something about New York that makes this city this much popular and this much special. Even when someone speaks about the United States New York is one of the first things that come to the mind. But Why? Why New York is this much special and different than the other 51 states of America?

This is because of its interesting and huge buildings, because of its crowded and noisy which you can never see the same in anywhere of the world, and because of its lovely songs and musical which rises from the Broadway. These reasons will be enough to give the answer for the question above. Its buildings are one of the reasons why New York is different than the other cities of the U.S. as it is mentioned above. The first building that one can think of is of course the "Statue of Liberty".

More than that Statue Of Liberty is not only the symbol of New York but also it is the symbol of the U.S. This wonderful statue is a gift for the American people from the French. In 1886 Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi who is a French sculptor designed the statue and he devoted his 21 years to make this masterpiece. The model for the statue was Bartholdi's mother and the 7 rays of the crown symbolizes the seven seas and seven continents. The statue is 93 m tall and 225 tonne weight and it dominates the whole New York harbour. 354 steps needed to be taken in order to reach the top where the Crown is. The crown is the highest point, which is open to the visitors.

There is museum inside the statue "Statue of Liberty Museum" which has different posters and photos of the statue. A familiar person who has also done the Eiffel Tower in Paris after this statue, Gustave Eiffel, designs the frame of the statue. The Pedestal is set between the walls of an army fort. On the base of the statue a poem of Emma Lazarus is carved there it says: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free". In 1986 since it is the 100th year anniversary of the statue it has been restored for $69.8 million and $2 million has spent for the fireworks. This was the greatest fireworks display that America has ever seen.

The torch has replaced with a new torch, which has coated with 24-carat golden leaves. The original torch is in the main lobby now. And from the crown and observation desk, you can have the best views of the lower Manhattan. The second significant building in New York is the "Empire States Building". This is the most famous skyscraper in the world on a site of two acres on 5th Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets.

It is 381 m. long and has 102 stories. It has made in 1930's and lasted 45 years to finish the whole building and remained as the tallest building until the 1970's. In 1953 a television antenna which is 60 m. long placed on top of the building. In the film "King Kong" the building is immortalized by the climbing of the giant gorilla on to the top. Besides the Empire State Building another significant skyscraper in New York is the Chrysler Building it is very familiar with the general view of New York in the TV's and cinemas.

Also in the TV commercials such as Parliament Cinema Club this building is very significant with a very beautiful white colour in a parliament blue night. This building is 319 m. long and designed by William Van Alen. In 1927 the whole project bought by Walter P. Chrysler who is a automobile magnate. In 1930 it was the tallest building in the world and a few months later it was surpassed by the Empire State Building. While going through the buildings The Brooklyn Bridge should be talked some about. Another famous building about New York, actually about Brooklyn is the Brooklyn Bridge.

This bridge is very important because it connects the two cities Brooklyn and Manhattan over the East River. The Bridge has completed in 1883 and took 16 years to be finished. More than 600 people have worked on it and more than 20 people died during the construction. John A. Roe bling designed the bridge in 1863 just before the construction started.

Each year the Forth of July is celebrated with fireworks on the bridge. Central Park, many of those who have watched any American TV series or movies must have heard about it. Dustin Hoffman's Marathon Man, Simon and Garfunkel's historical concert in 1981 are some of the examples of the popularity of this oasis in the middle of a very crowded and stone filled city. Central Park is the only place you can have some sun and breathe some fresh air right in the heart of the busy city. In mid-1840's William C. Bryant started a campaign for the park and got support from Andrew J. Downing who is an acclaimed architect. In 1858 the winning design has selected from 33 entries.

The park has placed on 840 acres and took 15 years to build and 40 years to grow. After giving this much information about New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art must be mentioned. The museum is placed in Central Park, on the 5th Avenue and 82nd St. In the beginning in 1866 this was a very tiny project however it became a monster project. The opening was in 1870 and the first collection containing 174 pieces and now its housing to 3.3 million works of art. A place which should be seen, at least after this much development, its worth for it. And the Wall Street, how can someone ignore the great Wall Street in New York.

Finally the Broadway, almost everyone knows about Broadway it is the place where all the theatres placed on and where the great musicals, plays and songs rises towards the every corner of the world. The most famous of these theatres are The Neighbourhood Playhouse, Henry Street Settlement and the Washington Square Players. Incredibly wonderful and incredibly cheering colourful place.
