Animal Farm By: George Orwell Animal Farm portrays many facets of the Communist revolution in Russia; however the book and the movie are both set on a farm in England in the 1950's. The book starts with Old Major, the founder of animalism, explaining how the animal rebellion would be coming soon and everyone should be preparing for the revolution. According to the book he died of old age but in the movie he was hit by a bullet from Mr. Jones's shotgun causing Old Major to fall out of the hay loft and break his neck. Later Napoleon and Snowball come to prepare the animals for the coming revolution.

Jones was a drunk and his workers did not always feed the animals regularly so one night Jones to the men out for drinks and they did not return for three days, and when he did return he still did not feed the animals. The animals took it upon themselves to break into the food storage and feed themselves and they were happy until Jones heard the noise they were making and went in there to see what was going on and when he tried to stop them they all attack him at once and chased him and his men of the property and then it was all theirs. Snowball started right away showing them the ways of animalism and stating that they were rules to live by. Snowball wrote The Seven Commandments of Animalism which are as follows: whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy, whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend, no animal shall wear clothes, no animal shall sleep in a bed, no animal shall drink alcohol, no animal shall kill another animal, all animals are equal. In early October Jones and all his men along with half a dozen others from fox wood and pinch field the neighboring farms came to the farm and the animals had been expecting this so Snowball lead the charge while Napoleon and squealer hid Snowball was wounded by a shot from one of the men's guns, but they chased all the men out of animal farm for good or so they thought.

Soon Jessie the dog had a litter of puppies of which Napoleon took in for his own special "tutoring" and Squealer explained in his usual manner by telling Jessie that she should be happy that her puppies are getting special education. Snowball in hopes to improve the farm began drawing plans for a windmill which will be rigged for electricity but Napoleon did not like this idea, but he never liked any of Snowball's ideas. One night there was a debate over the windmill in the barn Snowball and Napoleon argued back and forth over the windmill, until Napoleon let out a high pitched whimper that no one had ever heard him utter before. Then nine enormous dogs wearing brass collars entered the barn these were Jessie's puppies they dashed straight for Snowball and chased him right off of the farm.

Then Napoleon got onto the raised platform and proclaimed that there would be no more meetings and no more debates and that a committee of pigs would make all the decisions. Soon he proclaimed that the building of the windmill had been his idea all along and that they proceed with it. The work on the windmill was long and hard of which none of the pigs did any work they had moved into the house and taken up drinking whisky. One stormy night on the farm the wind had been so strong that it blew over the windmill, but according to Napoleon this was all the work of Snowball the traitor and pretty son when any thing went wrong it was the work of Snowball. Napoleon had decided that the farm needed to begin trading with other farms so he had a man named Mr. Whymper come out to the farm once a week to make deals they had decided to sell some timbers to the Pilkington farm, but after Pilkington had paid and taken the timbers it was discovered that the bank notes were a forgery. Later the Pilkington men Charged on the farm and blew up the re-built windmill.

Harder than ever Napoleon had the animals working to rebuild the windmill he had them working night and day with little food to sustain themselves. One day Napoleon had the neighboring farms over for a drink that same days the pigs were seen walking on their hind legs and the sheep were heard bleating "four legs good, two legs better". The commandments had been marked out and below it had been written "All animals are equal some animal are more equal than others". Later that night when they were having drinks it was almost impossible for anyone to tell the difference between them.

I believe that the book was far better than the movie because it was more in depth. The movie I think was worse mainly because it had a happy ending and it should not have one. Themes: man vs. nature, man vs. man, and animals vs. self.
