Blanche feels this necessity and she tried to make herself loved but she has failed. Blanche arrives in New Orleans in a streetcar with only one desire; to find someone who would love her. Her sister, Stella, was her only family member left; and Blanche goes to her in order to find a solution for her problems. Blanche lives in a world of illusions that she uses to hide from the real world. In the first scene we notice Blanche is very nervous and drinking alcohol to elude her reality.

Then she tells her sister about the lost of Belle Reve, the family mansion. In this scene we see that she felt guilty for her personality. She uses many arguments trying to justify the lost of Belle Reve. Blanche is trying to show the others that all the circumstances have lead her to be hostile, and in some way violent. Her sister abandoned her and her family at a very young age, Blanche has seen how every member of her family died and abandoned her.

She feels horrible about the little phrase "Don't let me go" that every moribund of her house tells her before dying, as if though she was able of do something to help them. Gradually she was getting lonely in the mansion. Her husband also died and she was left completely alone. Blanche now lives in a mansion with too many rooms that she cannot fill. In her necessity of being loved she becomes a prostitute hoping that one of the gentlemen that she works for, love her. Also she seduces a seventeen-year-old boy.

This causes more problems for the poor Blanche. She was now jobless; so at this point in her life Blanche has lost everything except for her little sister. She was her only hope to begin a new life. The first encounter we see between Blanche and Stella was not good at all. Blanche starts criticizing the conditions in which Stella lives.

Blanche wants the best for her sister and she does not want that her sister to suffer the way she did. Until this moment Stanley has not sympathized with Blanche, also he hates her because she wants to change the way they lived. Blanche in her confusion, flirts with Stanley many times during her visit to Stella's house. Stanley does not return any feeling of love towards Blanche, instead he rapes her.

Blanche also tried to be loved by Mitch, he was starting to love her but he was scared about Blanche's past and he left her. At this point Blanche becomes frenetic, and she flirts with every man in search of "love". She has trusted her sister until this moment; she was the only one that did not turn her back on her. Stella was the only one that apparently loves Blanche. We believe this, but at the end of the play we see how Stella decides to send her to an asylum. Blanche was crazy but the only medicine that she needed was some love.

She needs somebody to care for her. The play finished with the phrase "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers". Blanche lets us know that the only person that had showed some care for her was not her family. Her sister abandoned her and her parents died when she was very young. The man who has promised to be to her side has committed suicide. Blanche never finds someone who loves her or takes care of her.

All the people that she loves; reject and lie to her. She finally goes crazy. Everybody has contributed to the Blanche's madness. They have killed her slowly. She leaves the house but now she is the one who says, "Don't let me go, please love me... .".
