The last of the Mohicans James Finemore Cooper portrays Hawkeye as a very noble and very civil person. Compared to the other first nations characters in the film, Hawkeye is presented as being less savage and a better speaker. Because Hawkeye is the noble hero the English he is portrayed to look and act better than the first nations people fighting with the French. The clothes he wears are much more like the English people's clothes rather then those of the other first nations people in the movie and he speaks english perfectly but the English enemy Magua speaks in the third person. Cooper did this so Hawkeye would not appear to be savage making him a more likable character for the English readers or watchers. James Finemore Cooper stereotypes the Amerindians that fight against the english as being extremely savage unlike the ones fighting with the english against the french, who are portrayed as being very noble and civilized.

For example he portrays them as being emotionless as they run around throwing tomahawks into peoples backs and scalping soldiers without hesitation or remorse. Magua is an ally with the French so he is presented as being very uncivilized, he is shown to be uncilized because he is a poor speaker, he speaks in the third person all the time. He also dresses in cloth that is very revealing. On the other hand the Amerindians who fight with the English, such as Chingachgook and Unc as are well dressed and well spoken.
