Race Race can be divided into several categories. For the purpose of this paper, two major categories will be discussed. The first category will include the Shawnee County and the U.S. population that is either of one race or two or more races. The second category includes the following six races; white, African American, American Indian and Alaskan Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, and some other race. The largest percentage of the Shawnee County and U.S. population is of one race and white.

A Closer Look at Shawnee County Demographics This section will discuss four additional demographics used to describe the population of Shawnee County. These demographics include marital status, education, occupation, and household income. Marital Status The population in Shawnee County used to determine marital status is represented by individuals 15 years of age and older. In addition, five categories were used to describe the marital status of the population in Shawnee County.

These categories include; never married, now married, separated, widowed, and divorced. The categories of widowed and divorced can further be described by distinguishing between male and female. The category of now married represents 55% of the Shawnee County population. Refer to Appendix 2 for a complete list and percentages per category and Graph 5 for an illustration. Education The education of the population in Shawnee County is divided into seven categories. The categories are determined my the highest level of education completed and include: less than 9th grade; 9th to 12th grade; high school graduate; some college; associate degree; bachelor degree; and graduate or professional degree.

The largest population in Shawnee County is high school graduates, which make up 33.6%. Those with an education of less than 9th grade represent the smallest percentage of the population with 3.8%. Occupation The following six categories were used to determine occupation: management; professional and related; service; sales and office; farming, fishing, and forestry; construction, extraction, and maintenance; and production, transportation, and material moving. Household Income The income of Shawnee County residents in 1999 was determined using ten categories. Although the median household income is $40,988, the largest percentage of households have an average income of $50,000-$74,999. Refer to Appendix 5 for a complete list and Graph 10 for an illustration. Conclusion The data discussed shows that there are similarities between the Shawnee County and U.S. population.

When comparing the two, gender and age percentages are very similar. The demographic that varied most between the two was race. Although the rankings of each race were the same, the percentages represented were not.
