In this essay on A Separate Peace by John Knowles I will be writing about the coming of age in this book. This essays main topic will be how gene grows throughout the book and also how he becomes a young man in his time at Devon collage. I will be explains what I think of the coming of age topic and my person experience on this topic. I think Gene really grows in this book.

In the beginning of the book he always would fallow Finny and listen to everything he said. He didn't think for himself most of the time. As the book went on he really became more independent and started to think for himself. Out of all the things in the book that happened I think the death of finny was the one that gene grow the most from.

He had to deal with the pane of loosing his best friend and also having to over come the fact that he might have caused his death in some way. Everything in the book really gave him I chance to grow up. When finny went home for a while I think Gene really had time to be by himself and find his own way not fallow finny around and have finny run his life. That might have been one of the reasons that gene shook the tree to make finny fall. I think Gene really did want Finny to fall then Gene could take over control of his own life. I had a friend like finny, we always hung out and there was never a dull moment he always found something for me and him to do.

My friendship was kind of just like Gene and Finny friendship. Being friends with this kid really gave me a change to grow up. We were like brothers, we would do everything together. I think having a best friend is the most in portent thing to have in your life it gives you someone to talk to and grow up with.
