An important historic character was born on January 6, 1880. His name was Douglas MacArthur. He was the son of Lt. General Arthur MacArthur, who won the Civil War. The start of his career was when he graduated college with the highest honors from West Point University in 1903. During WWI MacArthur lead the 42 division (also known as the Rainbow) of the allied Expeditionary Force in France. After the war MacArthur became superintendent of West Point.

In January of 1930 he was promoted to full 4-star general and named the U.S. Army's Chief of Staff. He retired from the army in 1937 and became the president of the Philippines. In 1941 Mac Arthur was recalled to active duty. In 1942 he became Supreme Allied Commander, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1945 he became a five-star General. In 1950, at the beginning of the Korean War, he was awarded the Supreme United Nations Leader, and became governor.

In 1951 Harry S. Truman relieved him from his command. Since MacArthur was mad at Truman MacArthur ran against him for president in 1952 but didn't make it. His last 12 years was spent in New York speaking out on political issues. General Douglas MacArthur died at Walter Reed Army Hospital on April 14, 1964. He was 84 years old. Before burying him in Norfolk, Virginia, MacArthur's body lay in state in New York City so that people could pay tribute to him.
