Gibbons 1 Rachel Gibbons Melissa Richardson Composition I March 5, 2003 My Sunshine Both partners make this promise and then, in turn, they place a ring on the other's fourth finger and repeat: "With this ring I thee wed; with my body I thee honor and all my worldly goods with thee I share". These words of love are sacred to me and will remain in my heart. I have lived these words each day for the past seventeen years. The most important person in my life is a sincere, generous, compassionate and loving man, my husband, Joseph Gibbons. Serving as a soldier for my country in the United States Army I received my first duty assignment overseas in Frankfurt, Germany in 1984. I had no clue that this would be a great impact on my life.

Never having been out of the state of Michigan other than for my military training, this was such an exciting and overwhelming time for me to be in a new country. Arriving at the quadrangular, three story, brick barracks (a building used for lodging soldiers), I secured my belongings in my room, which would be my home for the next eighteen months. I proceeded down the hall to familiarize myself with my new surroundings. Passing by the CQ desk (charge of quarters), I recognized my supervisor who was having a conversation with another soldier.

I made my way down the hall to the drinking fountain. As I was drinking the refreshing cool water, I felt a tap on my right shoulder. I turned to look back and standing behind me was the soldier I had seen talking with my supervisor earlier. While staring into his brown eyes with surprise and curiosity, he stated "Hi! my name is Joe" and I answered abruptly with "so!" . Feeling awestruck and alone, I headed straight for my room. Little did I know, I had just exchanged my first word with my future.

Gibbons 2 I think what caught my eye the most about this incredible man is that he is sincere and down to earth. Joseph is a rare type of man; by this I mean he does not have the need to keep up with stylish trends of having the latest material items or the newest design of clothing that everyone seems to need to survive day to day. When I look at Joseph I see an image of Michael Clark Duncan, the actor who portrayed the character of John Coffee in the movie, The Green Mile. Comparing the character of John Coffee and Joseph for likeness, I see a gentle country boy with the heart of a lion and the spirit of an angel.

Physically he has brown sugary smooth skin with big brown eyes surrounded with long thick lashes. His smile beams like a ray of sunshine and he has a frame built like a strong steady pillar of six feet and four inches. Joseph has colossal but gentle protective hands that could be a cradle for a newborn. His structure is stabilized with feet like fourteen inch yachts. Being generous and possessing a bright, beautiful image about life comes naturally to Joseph. By giving hope and encouragement he has lifted many broken spirits due to illnesses, deaths, sorrow, financial situations, rage and hate.

He has never asked for gratitude in return. Joseph has always shown a positive side of life and living when dealing with another person's hardship or heartache due to the everyday stresses of life. When he takes time out of his schedule to give a person a ride because their car has broken down or when he helps a neighbor finish cutting their yard because they have run out of gas. When a storming migraine hits me and I am down for hours or even days, Joseph is right there taking care of our three beautiful children, caring for me and making sure that our home is still running smoothly. He is always putting others ahead of himself and tries to find the positive for every negative. Joseph has a way of giving love and compassion to people in the worst situations.

He is a Correctional Officer who guides and talks to many different walks of life, through any situation when needed. He is non-judgmental and understands people. Finding the good in people helps Joseph maintain his priorities and lets him give love and compassion to others when he can. Gibbons 3 Giving love and compassion to others has made my husband a great man. By taking control of his life and making choices, Joseph tries to live his life to the fullest and he does not blame others for his misfortunes when they occur.

I receive strength and comfort by watching him share his love and compassion. Our children have a great father to teach them to accept life as it gives us many bumps in the road. Instilling these great qualities in are children will make them each a better person throughout their lives. Knowing and living these qualities will help our children in dealing with the many diverse people they may encounter on their journey. Joseph Gibbons is important to me because he helps complete my life.

He is always the sunshine in my day even when the skies are gray and gloomy. Joseph and I have enjoyed our union together as husband and wife for seventeen years. Together we are a king and queen in a kingdom with many beautiful memories and have given life to three beautiful children. I will always have his support and encouragement in whatever may come my way in life through the good times and the bad. Joseph shares his love of life with a great many people, and I love him for that!
