Global Conflict And Peace example essay topic
An example of this would be the Cold War. The two main countries involved in the cold war were the Soviet Union and the United States. During this period both the countries produced as much nuclear weapons as the possibly can. USSR's aim was to convert the countries under its sphere of influence into communism. While the States aim was to preserve democracy in the countries, which fell under their sphere of influence. But they had on going conflicts between them.
As a result both these countries evolved into great nuclear powers to threat each other. Americans started a new pact known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) this was basically to bring an end and also because the threat of Soviet expansion after the Second World War. USSR's response to this was the Warsaw Pact. This was basically Eastern Europe against Western Europe and North Atlantic countries.
Eastern Europe was communist, while Western Europe was democratic. Many countries were in both these pacts. By creating two power blocks like this, the threat of nuclear war was very real. Both alliances were against each other specially the United States and the Soviet Union. These two great power blocs created a situation where the prospect of war was too horrific to take likes in. The cold war continued without the outbreak of a major war until communist regime fell in these countries.
These two pacts managed to decrease the possibility of a third world cause it would affect both. Both sides were very venerable. And neither side would win because both sides would take in equal damage. This pact shows how alliances or power bloc decreases global conflict and peace is accomplished as a result. Another example of this would be the War on Terrorism. Terrorist organizations attacked the United States in September killing five thousand civilians.
This caused the Americans to align with other countries and bring and end to terrorism. Although this was not a written alliance but all the countries asked, came together to put a stop on terrorism. Here the Alliance or the power bloc's is working because countries are working together by sharing resources and communicating with each other. All the countries together are passing on information to each other that are needed to bring an end to terrorism and helping out in any way that they can. This made things difficult for terrorist organizations to carry on and was hard for them to find a loophole through all this. That way the combine strength of all this countries decreased the chance of terrorism acts.
This shows how alliance decreases global conflict or regional conflict and results in peace. Nations should align them selves with other nations because in cases where a clear alliance pivoting on the issue does not exist there is on going conflict going on in the world today. An example of this would be the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Palestine wants to be free country by itself from Israel while Israel considers Palestine as not a country by itself but a region within Israel. This has and is still causing a lot of unrest in that region of Middle East. The conflict in Israel and Palestine is ongoing.
Israel is aligned politically with the United States. On the other hand the Arab league recognizes Palestine as a country and Palestine as also being one of its members. Despite the existence of political alliances the secondary nature of this issue is that their alliance still allows room for conflict to continue. When this issue with alliances would be centrally focused on this, it would have global implications and reprocutions. If both alliances were centered around the Israeli and Palestinian conflict then serious nature of this conflict would be resolved. This global significance issue would then force some sort of peaceful resolution.
They would more likely want to end it peacefully then not. Thus an absence of a clear alliance still causes conflict today when it can be avoided. Another example of this would be the conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. This conflict is ongoing.
India is politically aligned with the United States and deals arms with the Russians. While Pakistan is also politically aligned with the United States and deals with its arms with China. But neither of these alliances is based around the Kashmir issue. It is merely a secondary issue to the Soviets and the United Stated and China although they are somehow aligned with this to South Asian countries. Thus in the absence of once again a clearly opposed alliances there is room for small scaled proxy war that has been ongoing for 50 years. If there were a crystal clear alliance between these countries then this conflict would be resolved.
The disadvantage of a large alliance is that if there is a conflict then implications will be massive like in the Second World War. Critics for this position argue that too much power can cause a great deal of problem, which is devastating. Yes, but there should be a power bloc or an alliance because it has worked and still works in the nuclear age. An example of this would again be the cold war. The concept of power bloc in the cold war worked. This was the greatest case of power bloc.
There was never even a direct conflict. Although there was huge amount of massive arms build up. Another example of this would be the mutual respect in the world today between nuclear power countries. Because these governments appreciate the level of destruction that would take place again if such a conflict had occurred again. In conclusion it is derived from my paper that nations should align themselves with other nations because, after the Second World War given the technology of mass destruction available to us today, it is a successful way of decreasing global conflict and peace is accomplished as a result as well where a clear alliance pivoting on the issue does not exist there is on going conflict going on in the world today and lastly nations should align themselves because it has worked and still works to maintain peace in the world today. My position in this paper was that world peace must best be attained through joining a power bloc or an alliance system.
