Television situation comedy is a writer!'s medium. Good situation comedy depends on the performances of its central characters. To what extent do you think these statements are true? Good television situation comedy depends on many crucial factors. Two of the most important factors are the performance of the actors, the quality of the writer!'s script. Good situation comedy, to a large extent, ultimately depends on the performances of its central characters.

Although the script is also important, however, in comparison to the acting, its value is of a lesser degree. The quality of a situation comedy, in the end, depends mainly on how well the actor can deliver the lines of the script to the audience. Excellent writing can be let down considerably by poor acting. Poor writing, however, can be counterbalanced with exceptional delivery and acting. An example of this theory can be shown with the popular television series, ! ^0 Kath & Kim!

+/-. If the characters of Kath and Kim were replaced by, for instance, two shy members of public with no acting experience, the quality of the show would almost certainly drop considerably. If, on the other hand, the script was replaced by one of a year 9 student, the comedy also undoubtedly lose its humourous value, but only to a minor extent because of the excellence of the acting. This is the reason why when a comedy is publicized, the actor!'s names are presented boldly, and the writer!'s names could be of minor importance or not even announced. This is especially true with advertisements for comedy movies. As comedy depends on the actor!'s performance, the public audience commonly predicts the quality of a comedy by its cast list, and may ultimately determine if they will watch the show or not.
