Government Of The People By The People example essay topic
And yet today, we see an ever increasing toll on the average American. We work the equivalent of four months a year just to pay our taxes. This has happened by a slow and gradual process. Our government increases taxes in small amounts that may not be liked by the citizens of this country, but they are tolerated. The main reason for all these taxes, is so that the government can fund all those great things it does for us. Of course, it seems the government has their hands in just about every aspect of our lives now.
This is a far cry from the role of government planned out by our forefathers. The government was meant to be a minimal support function. Its capacity was to protect the rights of its society from harm, both internal and external. But today our government plays a role in deciding what we eat, where we live, how much we earn, and many other personal decisions. Our government was suppose to be a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. But somehow it has warped into a beast.
And we seem to have little control over it. Recently we have seen propositions passed by the people only to have the government say that we can t do it. Like a parent choosing for a child who doesn t know better. When this happens, the people are shocked, but feel powerless to do anything about it.
One might say, if you don t like the way things are, then go out and vote. But when was the last time you saw a candidate that stood for everything yo believe in. Then go a step further and ask yourself, when was the last time you saw a politician who did everything he or she said they were going to do while running for office. It is important to understand that our government can not be changed by just one man or woman. But that in and of itself it part of what feeds the beast.
One must sit back any wonder, do we continue to conform, and watch the beast devour us slowly, or is it time to take the path of our forefathers, and start anew.
