Governor Gray Davis example essay topic

340 words
Efforts to throw Governor Gray Davis out of office are necessary. The fiscal management of Governor Davis has been extremely poor. Pete Wilson, the former governor of California, left behind a multi-billion dollar surplus by putting cautious limits on unnecessary government spending. During Davis' term of office, he managed to turn this immense surplus into a record-breaking deficit. The deficit now rests at an estimated $34 billion, which tragically is greater than the combined budget deficits of every other state in America.

Although it shouldn't seem surprising, given his willingness to spend money on anything that he liked- or perhaps just on any issue that a financial contributor to his campaign finds heartwarming. Of further interest is the fact that before the election in 2002, there was little mention from the governor's office of an approaching budget crisis. Then, only a week following his successful re-election, as if some bewildering revelation had only then exposed the truth to Davis himself, he proclaimed the crisis and the imminent need for not only spending cuts, but tax increases. As if it were the taxpayers' fault for not giving the state enough money to dissipate. This financial mismanagement is only the beginning, however.

Davis is demanding for higher student fees at the state-run universities, causing the affordability of higher education to diminish. Also, despite Davis's claims for his love of education, California's lower education system remains one of the nation's worst ranked. The educational situation is so bad that not even the California Teacher's Association, who were once loyal supporters of Davis, has chosen to oppose the recall. Clearly, Gray Davis has done little, if anything at all, to improve the state of California. Rather, his management has only harmed California's economy, its education systems, its taxpayers and the honor and veracity of the position of governor. For those reasons, I entirely support the recall effort and anybody's attempt to make Gray Davis pay for these numerous grievances.
