english English coursework I am going to talk about how relationships in the short stories have been portrayed and see the interesting methods in which the writer presents the relationships. She begins to tell us about her passion for flying and superman. "My flying dreams" and "superman started invading my dreams". This shows the innocence of the narrator's childhood. The war is present and her uncle frank is staying with family while waiting to go to war. The narrator is invited to Paula Brown's birthday party, the narrator seem's to like Paula's new snowsuit. The day the narrator watches the Japanese war film which has a great impact on her.

The next day Paula falls into an oil puddle and her snowsuit gets ruined. The narrator is blamed for this and everyone including her uncle and children turn on her. Flight by Doris Lessing. This is a story about an old man who lives with his granddaughter (Alice) and daughter (Lucy).

The story is in third person narrative but mainly from the grandfathers prospective. The grandfather has a passion for pigeons "Pretty, pretty, pretty; he said" he likes the pigeons a lot. He is upset of the fact that his granddaughter is going to marry he feels she is too young and wants to hold on to her. "can't we keep her for a bit longer" by the tone of the sentence it seems like the grandfather has been through this before. The granddaughter and the boyfriend buy the grandfather a pigeon and the old man realises that the young people must go their own way just like the pigeons. At the end of the story it is the granddaughter who is crying when she perhaps realise what the grandfather has done.

The main character in the story is the mother, the story is written in first person narrative it is as if the mother is talking to her child almost in a form of a letter.

There are a lot of complex relationships in the story which come out when she discusses her childhood. The story is written in a style called stream of consciousness this is writing what's on your mind with no structure. The story is about a man who spends a lot of time away from home and his relationship with his daughters is very distant due to the reason of him being absent. Robert Quick feels bonding with his daughters is like flirting. The girls play fight with their father he describes this experience violent and vicious of the girl's behaviour. "Kate jumping on his stomach, Jenny seized him... as if to strangle him". and "homicidal maniac". The words he uses to describe the daughters action are very negative. At the end he realises that his relationship between his daughters and him is not very close at all. When the girls are alder they find it awkward to show any indication of affection towards their father he realises why at the end and he says himself "she's growing up and so am I" they both are seeing a different light towards each other and realising something.

Snowdrop by Leslie Norris, this story in is in third person narrative it expresses the boy's feelings and thoughts. The story begins with the children looking forward to seeing the snowdrops and when they finally sees the snowdrop he is disappointed to see nothing magical about them. There is a hidden relationship between Mrs Webster and the Meredith boy which is emphasized by using dialogues which are used to highlight and discover new things. "I want the girls to go quietly to the cloakroom and put on their coats" the fact she wants the girls to wear a coat and it says afterwards "you must wear a coat" makes you think why, is it because it is cold outside, or even maybe it links back to the Meredith boy's funeral because people wear coats at funerals and the word "quietly" make you sense she has something to do with the boy she might want to show respect towards him for some reason. At the end of the story the children see Mrs Webster crying they get frightened the boy sees her fragility and realises something new about adults and he grows up as he sees Mrs Webster in a different light. Relationships In " Flight" and "Your Shoes" the relationships are relatively similar the main similarity is that they both involve a teenage girl who want to be free from certain boundary's.

In "flight" it is the grandfather wanting to hold on to the granddaughter not wanting her to be married. The grandfather can't stand the idea of his last granddaughter getting married "shes the last... Can't we keep her for a bit longer?" It seems like the grandfather has been through this before, I state this because the grandfather's daughter says "you never did like it when I married". The Grandfather give the impression that he's quite childish and possessive towards the granddaughter it's like the granddad treats his granddaughter and even his own daughter like pets.
