Greek Sculpture The Greek Art And Sculpture example essay topic
The gothic architecture consisted of the larger and taller buildings different from those of the Romanesque predecessors. Their structures appeared to have more complicated ground plans. The use of flying buttresses ensured that the buildings were tall, thin walled and the interior of the buildings possessed columnar piers and the ribs. This played a very important role of the history of the gothic art. The gothic architecture consisted of three phases that were very successive. This included the early, high and late gothic periods.
The gothic architecture had three characteristics, the pointed arches, ribbed vault and the flying buttresS tain glass The art of stained glass is applied in the making of windows and lampshades and it's also useful in the boxes, clocks, cabinet doors and picture frames. The skills from the stained glass could be used to create a collection of the unique and classical designs. The stained glass patterns were ideal for the 'variety of crafts and their adaptations diversified the art crafts in the following; scrapbooking, clip art, stationery, paintings, ceramics, doll houses, glass painting, coloring patchwork and miniatures. The strain glass patterns are added so as to come out with unique and classical designs. The stain glass appears to look attractive and beautiful when the best skills are applied in their modeling stage. The term stain glass refers to colored glass as a material or to the works produced from it.
The term is common in the windows of church and also in other structured buildings. The art requires the skills of engineering to assemble the parts so that they can appear as illuminated wall decorations. The church windows are thematic that they can represent information from the bible. The making of the stained glass also encompasses gilding to add the decorations on the sides of the two pieces of thin glass.
The skill that is used involves the angel gliding and eglomise which produces an effect that is visible from the two sides. The stained glass was produced with the style that transformed from the gothic to classical style. The stained glass is incorporated together with the faceted lead crystal and forms an attractive window. Stained glass could also be made of large panels that were well painted and fired to produce a good design. The stained glass was present in the places of worship like the churches and synagogues, in buildings and as sculptures that were used commercially to decorate the public building Mosaic Mosaic is defined as the art of creating images by assembling some pieces of glass, stone and other materials. It is a style of decorative art and an element of the interior decoration or of the traditional and spiritual significance.
The pictures that are made from the art of mosaic are composed of the roughly cubic stones or glass that possesses different colors. The Christians utilized the mosaic art in their churches and also in the secular buildings. The mosaic panels were utilized to decorate the building and they appeared beautiful. The floor of the church could be decorated and this was seen in the church complexes The mosaics also decorated the walls of the churches. The church could illustrate the story of Moses in Mount Sinai where Moses is seen in the upper wall as seen in the two panels on the landscape background.
The transfiguration of Jesus could be shown on a golden background and it consists of the medallions of the apostles. This is illustrated in the picture below of Jesus and apostles in the times of transfiguration Mosaic is also observed in the urban art. The art has seen an original novel reinvention leading to the expansion of the mosaic artwork. The work consists of two styles which are distinct. The artists ensured that they used the small tile mosaics of a eight bit video game character which were composed across the cities. The rubik cubism style used the dual layer mosaic to decorate the urban and the cities walls.
The artists declared that the art of mosaic was becoming a popular art and they were in a position to work with stones, ceramics, shells, art glass, mirror, beads and the parts of a doll. The mosaic art left the walls of the modern buildings looking impressivRose windows The rose windows and the stained glass windows are a source of an impressive beauty and inspirations throughout the century. The window is said to have originated from the French gothic period. The rose window is a characteristic of the gothic architecture and it can be seen in most of the cathedrals. The windows are popular with the medieval features as seen in most of the churches in the city. The exterior of the rose in cathedrals would appear as illustrated below The rose was further developed into more elaborate styles in relation to the gothic architecture.
The rose window gained the greatest size and was now positioned under a circular arch. The developments further transformed to be put under a pointed arch. The window could now be placed over vertical lights as the apex or the pointer of the composition. The gothic style in the rose windows then decided to come up with a style to set the rose into a tier of vertical lights so that it could appear vast. The windows are also set squarely and not pierced with the sculpture In the period of early gothic, the rose windows had overlapping arcs that appeared like the flower petals, circular and square shapes. This was popular as the flower was associated with the lady of the rosary.
The period of late gothic brings out the rose windows with a complex design that uses the gothic style. The design originates from the central point and it is not symmetrical on each axis. The rose windows could also be used to pass information to a specific group. Greek sculpture The Greek art and sculpture had made a profound effect throughout the ages.
The modern day artists have duplicated the styles in the Greek sculpture to reach to the modern art and sculpture derived from the art of Romans. The artists use different materials including the stones, clay, limestone and the marbles. The Greek sculpture served great importance as they spoke a lot about the gods, the heroes, events, and the culture of the people. The sculptures were designed in a unique way and they were of the roman origin. The Hellenic Museum in Chicago obtains Greek cultural artifacts from the Greece especially Cyprus where most Greek cultural and traditional artifacts are perfectly stored for various purposes". The significance of the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Centre to the city is that it contains satisfactory information and exhibition of Greek culture that people interested in Greek culture and scholars studying the culture can come to obtain information and view the Greek culture from the Museum.
The Hellenic Museum has widely received donation from the Greek community to facilitate exploration of the Greek culture and tradition through art. This quote supports the thesis on how the Greek represent their culture in Chicago The Greek sculptures are respected because of the value that they hold in the society. The Greek sculpture also applied the classical art to produce the most exquisite sculptures that are seen in the modern settings. The artists have mastered the art to help in the creation of statues that can show the freedom of movement and expression and in the celebration of mankind as an independent identity. Chicago is an industrial world class city that houses a lot of museums where different world societies and cultures have put their exhibitions to portray what they really are.
The iconic museums in Chicago, Illinois include the Field Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chicago Art Institute, Chicago Smart Gallery, and the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Centre located in 801 West Adams Street, 4th Floor, Chicago, Illinois 60607. Dominic Pacyga over 350,000 Greeks came to the United States of America between 1890 and 1920 and many settled in what was known by then as the Greek town. Presently the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Centre contains art related to the ancient Greek civilization in Cyprus and a numerous maps that show the Greek empire since the medieval era to this modern period. Pacyga says that, "This huge collection dedicated to the history of Greek civilization on Cyprus includes over three hundred artifacts. In addition to pieces of antiquity, the Cyprus collection comprises a large number of maps ranging from the late medieval period to the modern era". This quote supports the thesis concerning the Greek representation of their culture in Chicago.
Andrew Kop an says that the establishment of the Orthodox Church in Chicago led to the establishment of a school almost immediately. Greek nationalism and the Orthodox Church were the catalytic factors that led to the establishment of the learning system in the United States. These similarly are the long held beliefs that the Greek Orthodox Church was the epitome of classical learning of the Greek scholars in numerous fields. "Every organization that was involved in the social welfare of the Greek community in Chicago ensured that the promotion of the Greek educational system was given first priority".
The educational system was to be promoted through the perpetuation of the Greek language that was to ensure ample understanding of the Greek culture and tradition, language and the generation to get acquainted with the Greek way of learning and religious beliefs. The quote about the Orthodox Church in Chicago is a representation of the Greek culture in Chicago The Greek sculptures were also painted in strong and bright colors. The skin was never painted as the stones had a color closely similar to the skin appearance. The painting of the Greek sculptures was a very unique and distinguished style of art. The sculptures were painted with bold and elaborate patterns using specific metals to depict the lips, leg, fingernails and many more.
The role of painting was to bring out the visual features of architecture. The Greek temples were painted with the bright colors on the walls that were made by the stone Yerba Buena Gardens The Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco, California are two public parks situated in the city and are owned by the city's Redevelopment Agency. The two parks contain numerous public art pieces that range from Green Glass Ship to the Shaking Man. The pieces of art are done by various outstanding public artists such as Terry Allen and John Rol off among many others.
The artworks in the Yerba Buena Gardens are outstanding in nature as they expose the talent and the message that the involved artist wanted to put across. In the Yerba Buena Gardens there is the Green Glass Ship also known as the Suspect Terrain or the Deep Gradient. The Green Glass Ship portrays a ship as is viewed when is at the shore. The deep gradient as it is at times referred to is a 20 ft tall sculpture that shows a ship in a sinking position. The deep gradient is constructed by steel and glass and is painted green and inclined for various symbolisms. The deep gradient is strategically positioned in the park to bring out a clear view of the sinking ship in the park.
The stem of the ship is made of the tectonic plate extracts that research show were picked more than four miles off the San Franciscan coast. There is also an ever flowing spring of water that is meant to keep the whole thing under favorable atmospheric conditions such as temperature that might crack the glasses due to heat. This condition is expected to be maintained for the nature inside not to realize the immediate change in weather but are to remain as if in their natural habitats. The silt formed inside due to the sedimentary rocks is also to be washed away by the circulating water.
The water is also to support the aquatic life inside the ship that came up as result of the extraction of the sedimentary plates from the sea. Inside the ship there exist a number of processes that tend to describe the climatic requirements of various species for the purpose of growth and development. This leaves the ever existing questions of what the public art sculpture means or represents and what is its significance in Yerba Buena Gardens. The public art works in cities parks highways or avenues or in front of monumental buildings usually symbolize something or conveys a message that might not be obvious to visitors.
The meaning of the ever flowing water and the organism living inside the deep gradient symbolizes the harmonization of the biodiversity and how they support life systems on earth. The sedimentary extractions too symbolize the origination of the state and the city at large. The Green Glass Ship according to research done shows the origins of the San Francisco city and the whole of the state of California from the sea floor. The nature of the landscape of San Francisco is derived from the sea sediments as symbolically portrayed with the sediments placed in the sculpture nearly two decades ago. The sculpture therefore symbolizes the origins of the whole state of California and San Francisco in particular. The embedding of the whole sculpture with sea sediments makes it more identical with the sea life and the coastal nature of San Francisco.
Environmentalism is also not spared in the sculpture at is represented by the naming of the sculpture. The green part of the name rings a bell in environmentalism. The combination of the sea and land means that the sediments available in the Green Glass Ship are a sign of the San Francisco city's endowment in geological and architectural environment. The exchange of material to land from sea and to sea from land is also symbolically exposed herein. The deposition process which features the joining of various substances into the sea and the eventual return of the products as sediments to land makes the deep gradient be considered a greenhouse. The built environment generally in California is a clear indication that the idea of the loss of biodiversity is real.
Research shows the formation of towns particularly San Francisco is covered within the Bay Area land formation and other built environment. The loss of biodiversity is evident through human activities in the building of San Francisco. Human activities such as extraction of rocks and sand is majorly erosion, the transportation system is majorly the flowing of the components whilst the construction of the general infrastructure is sedimentation as is evident in the deep gradient where the sediments are also used. Greek Temples These were structures which were built to for deity statutes to stay. The purpose of cult did not take place on these temples as rituals and sacrifices that were dedicated to the deity did not take place in these temples. These temples in most of the times were used to keep votive offerings.
In Greek architecture these temples were widespread buildings and most important. Greek temples between 6th century BC and 9th century BC improved as they finally developed into buildings that were monumental double portico's. Initially they were made of mud brick structures. The new temples had a height of more than 20 meters excluding the roof. Architectural orders that were originally specific governed these temples. Various ground plans that were to be combined together with superstructure in these different orders were to be developed.
These temples were constructed and designed according a set of proportions that were mostly determined by the foundation levels dimensions or columns lower diameter. These temples were painted and the reason why they were painted was to contrast the bright blues and reds with the white of the stucco or of building stones. There were temples that had rich figural decoration that were in the form of pediment sculpture and reliefs that made them more elaborate
