The two major political parties are the Republican and the Democratic Party; however over the past few decades many people have become very dissatisfied with them. The two new minor parties that have emerged are the Green Party and the Libertarian Party. These two new parties are showing promise and growth in the political spectrum. The Libertarians main focus are the right of the people, those rights include the rights to the fruit of their labor and the right to freely associate and form contracts and the limiting of government intervention. The Greens on the other hand, advocate values such as ecological wisdom, grass roots democracy, social justice, non-violence, decentralization, community-based economics, personal and global responsibility and the list goes on. These two new parties are rapidly growing and will eventually challenge the standings of the major political parties.

The Libertarian Party was founded in Colorado in 1971, and is becoming America's largest, fastest growing national third Party. The Libertarian Party platform calls for small government, low taxes, and the rights of individuals to control their own lives. They believe that no individual, group, or government should be able to initiate force against any other individual, group or government. For example, they believe in women's rights to an abortion and the rights of gays to have consensual sex and marriage.

Individuals should be able to make choices for themselves and be able to accept the responsibilities for their actions. The Libertarian Party also believe that the role of the government in the economic realm should be to protect private property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected. For example, people should be entitled to keep the fruits of their labor. The government should not be able to force collection of money or goods from any individual, this violates their civil rights.

The Libertarian Party also favors restoring and reviving a free market health care system. Citizens should be able to get free medical care and not have to worry about hospital costs. The Libertarians primary purpose is to resolve the social ills of society. Many people turn to the Libertarian Party because they are dissatisfied with the traditional Left and Right wing politics. The Green Party was founded in 1984 as an assemblage of a number of environmental and other progressive political groups. The platform of The Green Party includes ecological wisdom, social justice, and grassroots democracy.

Green politics is defined as an ecological approach to politics that links social and ecological problems. The Greens carry forward the traditional values of the Left: freedom, equality, and solidarity. The Green Party believes that in order for humanity to progress toward a democratic society, people must resolve the ecological crisis so that people are still around to enjoy democracy. The following are examples of platform planks that are the immediate policy that the Green Party advocates in order to move toward an ecological democracy.

The Green Party believes in an economic bill of rights. Jobs should be guaranteed for all. Full employment should be offered through community-based public works and community service programs, federally financed and community controlled. The ideal minimum wage of the Green Party starts at $12.50 an hour and increases to match the cost of living every year. The minimum wage today is still at $6.75, the cost to live in California is astronomical.

Many people are moving out of California because they can't afford to live here anymore. The rent is high and so is the tax. Companies are moving back east because it is cheaper to hire labor and buy materials. The unemployment rate is increasing every year. If the minimum wage was higher, people would be more apt to survive and stay in California.

The Green Party also believes in investing in renewable energy systems while shutting down nuclear power plants that cause harm to the environment. Preserving the environment now will enable the children of our future to live a healthier life. People take for granted how precious the earth is, many pollute the air with chemical waste with no regards to the living habitat that is slowly dying. The Green Party also believes in strengthening laws and enforcement against corporate crimes with penalties that include incarceration of executives and revocation of corporate charters. The real thieves of society I believe are those from corporations. Fighting corporate crime would allow prosperity for all.

Many of the platforms of the Green Party and the Libertarian Party are somewhat similar; however in my opinion the Libertarian Party has a tendency to lean more towards a Socialist Party. I favor more of the views of the Green Party, because it deals more with the awareness of the environment and how it plays a major role in our lives. In order for us to live in a world of harmony and peace, we must take care of the land that bears us the fruit for survival.
