Gregor's Metamorphosis example essay topic

When an experience changes lives, the change is not limited to only one life, it can effect others. If the alteration is dramatic, enough it can cause a domino effect of changes. Change does not necessarily just mean physical; it can also be emotional or mental. Gregor Samsa, the main character in Kafka's "Metamorphosis", was filled with empty routine leaving him feeling emotionally unfulfilled. At times, he felt caged and restricted due to the obligation forced upon him. May be that is why unexpectedly, one day he woke up as a gigantic bug.

His transmutation forcefully altered the lives of his family. In the beginning, Mr. and Mrs. Samsa at one time lived an extremely calm and pleasant life filled with no major responsibilities because Gregor would take care of them. The father would pleasantly enjoy his long tranquil breakfasts while reading parts of the daily newspaper aloud to his wife and daughter as they sat in the parlor. When Gregor became futile, the father had to become a bank attendant and the mother regardless of her asthma, pushed herself to sew underwear for strangers. They changed because they were no longer dependent. Both of learned how to survive...

Grete, was an immature juvenile when Gregor's metamorphosis took place. First she was considerate in caring for his condition. She originally took charge of looking after him. Some of her duties were to feed him and clean his room. At first, she made an effort to try to take proper care of him. Then as she became self involved in her responsibilities, she began to neglect her brother.

In effect, she found the responsibility of him irritating. She started to come to grip with the reality that the Gregor she knew was never coming back, losing all sense of hope. Her change was dramatic in the sense that she grew mentally. She gained respect from her parents because she became more headstrong. She transformed into a strong and mature young woman. Eventually, Gregor's main purpose for his transmutation was to bring a change of character to the family, forcing them to grow as individuals and make them realize life goes on after dramatic, life altering experiences.

The death of Gregor's humanity created the birth of their self-sufficient ness. They no longer needed Gregor to survive because he was already considered dead because of his physical state. The daughter", once considered a useless girl" was now a "vivacious young lady, blossoming into a lovely shapely girl. The mother actually worked instead of hiding behind her asthma.

While the father gained respect because he became the sole provider for the family.
