The purpose of this research paper is to investigate various areas concerning my future career, that is to be an obstetrician, also known as an OB / GYN. Some of the topics that will be discussed in my paper are those pertaining to exactly what an obstetrician is and the requirements that are needed in order to become an. These requirements will include the and personality traits of a potential obstetrician. The type of schooling that is, including the preparation that is available at Middlesex County College, and the average number of years that it takes in order to become an obstetrician. The demand for obstetricians will also be researched, along with the different promotional ranks that are available. Starting salaries, as well as potential salaries will be explained.

The reasons as to why a career in obstetrics appeals to me and the other possible career choices that I may decide to persuade in the future. An obstetrician is a physician who has successfully completed specialized education and training in the specialties of pregnancy, delivery, and the care directly following childbirth. A gynecologist is a physician who has successfully completed training in the health of the female reproductive system, including the treatments of disorders and diseases. Generally, the training for both an obstetrician and a gynecologist occur at the same time. This is how the term OB / GYN came to be. An OB / GYN is a physician who specializes in both pregnancy and female reproductive care.

The medical care that is provided by an OB / GYN can range from annual pap smears to prenatal care. An OB / GYN can also specialize in a particular area of medicine such as urinary tract disorders, infertility, and preventative health, to name a few (Women's Health Channel). Typically, the personality traits that are beneficial to an OB / GYN are patience, intelligence, compassion, and the ability to communicate well with people. These will help to make the patients feel at ease with their doctor and establish a trusting relationship if they feel that their doctor since raly cares about their health and well being. The number of hours that an OB / GYN may vary each week, hence this is not a standard, Monday through Friday, nine to five job.

OB / GYNs, who are in practice, can be expected to work as little as fifty hours a week or as many as one-hundred hours a week. This is with Sundays off. However, if the doctor is part of a group practice, the hours will be slightly less than if they were to be practicing solo. Also, since childbirth is can be unpredictable, many OB / GYNs are on call twenty four hours a day, and seven days a week. They can often be reached by cell phones and pagers.

In order to obtain a job in the field of obstetrics, one must first successfully relieve a bachelor's degree, a doctrine, and than be certified by the Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, different rules apply to those who have been practicing for a period of time. Gedes Grudzinskas stated that: 'If certified in obstetrics and gynecology after 1986, the physician must complete a re certification process every 10 years to maintain certified status. If certified before 1986, the physician can take a voluntary re certification process' (508). Although medical schools are not solely interested in science majors, it is important that the student take the required courses in order to gain acceptance into medical school upon relieving a Bachelor's degree. Many pre-med students study vigorously and maintain grade point averages of 3.5 and above.

However, due to the many hours that are put into school work, the number of pre-med students drops drastically during the last two years of college in which preparation for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) begin. The scores on the MCAT will determine if there is any chance of being accepted into medical school despite high Gas. During these years, students will also begin to apply to medical schools, which is another part of the grueling path on the way to becoming an OB / GYN. Once accepted into medical school, the future OB / GYN takes on another four year, rigourous work load. During the third year of school, the student rotates throughout the different areas within the medical field and begins an internship. Upon graduation from medical school, the student is now a doctor.

After medical school, the new doctor completes a residency for a few years. Once the residency is completed, the doctor can now take the specialty board exam and become 'Board Certified. ' It takes two years after practicing for a doctor to become certified. Once the certification is relieved, the doctor is now considered to be an OB / GYN. After becoming an official OB / GYN, the doctor has the option of choose ing a subspecialty. The four sub specialties are Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal / Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and infertility, and / reconstructive pelvic surgery.

These are the advances in this career feld. Throughout the United States, there are over forty-six thousand OB / GYNs. While this may seem like a large figure, it is not. The reason for this is that the majority of women use an OB / GYN as their primary medical care their pregnancies and all women are strongly encouraged to visit these doctors at least annually for check-ups.

Obviously, there are millions of women throughout the United States, although many OB / GYNs will have over one hundred patients, there is the constant demand for more OB / GYNs in order to balance out the population (Collins 15). Upon entering into the field of obstetrics, a new doctor will face the challenges of developing new client ile and gaining each patients trust. The life span of the career depends on how long the OB / GYN in practice crosses to work. As they get older, and have been in the field for many years, they may than decide to retire or teach their chosen career at a university. A higher opportunity in this field of work would depend on the number of years that the doctor has been in practice for. These opportunities could also vary based upon the experience that the doctor has.

Since there is a constant need for doctors, than this is a career that is in high demand. However, the career of an OB / GYN can end abruptly if there is a case of mal-practice. The starting salary of an OB / GYN is generally around one-hundred and fifty-thousand dollars a year. This figure varies based upon the location of the, but will be no less than one-hundred thousand dollars a year to begin with (Radom sky). The more successful the OB / GYN's practice is, the bigger the OB / GYN's salary will be. The most accomplished OB / GYNs earn an estimated three-hundred thousand dollars a year.

Naturally, this comes along with many years of practicing. If the OB / GYN has a subspecialty, the salary is slightly larger due to the greater knowledge and experience that he / she has. In order to prepare for my future career as an OB / GYN, my current major at Middlesex County College is Open College. However, as of next semester, it will be changed and Biology will than be my major. By relieving an Associate's degree in Biology at Middlesex County College, I will become prepared to continue my education in medicine. An alternate degree to Biology could be one in Chemistry or Physics, however, the major of a medical school candidate does not determine whether he / she will be accepted into medical school.

After relieving an Associate's degree from Middlesex County College, a Bachelor's degree will than be per sued. This degree can be obtained from practically any accredited college in New Jersey and throughout the United States. In New Jersey, Princeton University offers a challenging pre-medical program, while Drew University does not have a pre-medical major. The Pre-Medical Advisor at Drew University states that: 'At Drew, pre-med is a 'goal,' not a 'major. ' Therefore, pre-medical students at Drew enjoy greater flexibility in both academic and career options while preparing for medical school' (Justin). Once a Bachelor degree is relieved, medical school must now be attended.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ) is located in New Jersey and is an accredited medical school that offers a doctrine in medicine. UMDNJ also offers specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology. The physical requirements of an OB / GYN are that they should be able to move with ease and have no physical impairments such as not having full range of movement in the arms and the legs. Good sight, or visual enhancers such as glasses, are needed in order to be able to exam patients. An OB / GYN should also be physically fit, since they are in a health related field. If proper disease prevention methods are not practiced, there is a greater risk for infections and illnesses's, along with cuts from surgical tools.

Prior to researching a career as an OB / GYN, I knew that this is what I had wanted to do in my future. This career is appealing to me because I am fond of young children; and to have the ability to be involved in their care before they are even born and then to deliver them would be rewarding. The fact that I also get the ability to work with people in an where I will be tending to their needs also appeals to me since I like to help people. Prior to doing research on this career, I was aware of all the schooling that was involved, however, I did not know that it also required a residency program before I would be able to begin my own practice. It seems like a very long time, yet, the outcome is worth the effort. I also discovered that not only could I be an OB / GYN, but that I have the option of specialize ing in different sub specialties involved with obstetrics and gynecology.

In conclusion, after discovering that my GPA should be quite high, I will be motivated to work harder in all of my studies in order to achieve my dream of medical school. It is a long journey in order to become a practitioner of medicine, and although the the majority of pre-medical majors change their courses of direction early due to the many years of school, I have chosen to per sue my goal. I was well aware that doctors have a large salary, however, I was not aware that the starting salary was well over fifty-thousand dollars. 'Medical school is expensive. Some schools 'only' cost $10,000-12,000 per year, while others can exceed $35,000 per year. Scholarships are very limited, so most students take out student loans' (Hill).

Therefore, earning my Associate's degree at Middlesex County College will enable me to decrease my school expenses. Although Middlesex County College is only a small portion of my future schooling expenses, it is important because I am getting a quality education for less than it would cost to go to a university to earn my Associate's degree. This research paper has helped me to gain a better understanding on what it means to be an OB / GYN and how to go about achieving my dream.
