The western Immigration to the United States from 1860-1890 was one of the largest population movement in U.S. history. Most of the immigrants came from the Western Europe countries. In this essay we will be discussing why immigrants migrated to the U.S., how they made the trip over, and what they found when they finally arrived here. Immigrants came to the United States for many reasons. Most of them came here because of war or political reasons, such as the Germans who had the most immigrants from Western Europe. The Germans came over to the U.S. because of political reasons.

The main political reason was because of the Prussian Wars. The Italians where another culture to emigrate to the U.S. during this time period. They also had some political unrest in their country. Another reason why people emigrated to the United States was to be with family who already settled in America. For example Uncle Guise ppe came over on the boat, settled in, got a job, he would then go back and tell his family what a wonderful place the United States was. He would then come back with his brother who would work and save money to send his wife and children over.

It was just a cycle of family and people pouring into this country. Immigrants where also very easy to persuade because of the hardships they endured in their home country. Unlike the immigrants that left because of hard times such as war, some had to be persuaded to come to the "New World". Immigrants were sometimes even hired by companies that recruited people to come to the United States. They would use terms like "the streets are paved with gold" to help persuade people to make the trip over. The immigrants would be so amazed hearing about a wonderful place that existed they soon boarded a boat over to the U.S. Which leads to how they went about coming to the U.S. Once they made the decision to take the trip they just had to buy a ticket pack their bags and they where off.

They did not have much to pack because there was not much room on the boat and when they arrived they had no place to put their belongings. Once they arrived in the United States, they would have their names documented and have a physical. If they passed their physical, they would be sent off on their own. Some where set up in houses by the factories that employed and recruited them as mentioned before. Some stayed with family or friends that were already established in the U.S. However, many had to find work on their own as laborer, factory workers, etc. There was long hours at work, overcrowded housing, corrupt government officials, disease, and so on.

This created many hardships for new immigrants They may have been in a better place but they still had some hardships like back in their home country. New immigrants had to stick together because "natives" would treat them as outcasts. Some would be harassed because they were a certain nationality. Also the immigrants that were recruited by companies would have to work in the factories for pennies a day. They had to work long hours in dangerous conditions. After work, they would go home to a tenement that was overcrowded with people and was in a city where disease was rampant.

Although they had a better life in the U.S. compared to the "old country" it was still financially hard. In conclusion, the reason why immigrants came to the United States was because of political unrest, wars, and to be with family that had already moved here. They all came here by boat and had very little possessions. Finally, they found that the U.S. was not coated with gold. It was just like anywhere, they had to work and be strong to survive.
