The Lord of the Flies essay In William Golding's Lord of the Flies a group of kids who are fleeing a war, plane crashes and they are stranded on a deserted island without Adult supervision. The first thing all the kids do is vote for a chief and Ralph, who is more responsible, wins over Jack. They are the choices because Ralph is the Colonel of the whole group and Jack is the oldest out of all the boys. As the story goes on and when Jack starts his own group all of the kids lose sight of their main goal, to be rescued. They " re all having too much fun when they switch over to Jack's group hunting and killing for food. In the story there are four main characters that are in a sense the leaders of the crew.

There's Piggy and a quiet Simon who do not possess the scrappiness that Ralph and Jack do. These strengths are what help Ralph and Jack survive. Piggy is always talking about how his Auntie would not let him do this or that and Simon was just a quiet, reserved kid who is regarded as weird just due to the fact that he is calm. The first two kids are considered leaders but only to the who really do not matter in the big picture. To the big guns, Simon is just a silent and, 'batty'; kid who is called odd the entire story. Until he thinks he sees the beast everyone ignored him and when this happens he's running to tell all the boys that he had seen the beast and when they see him coming they mistake him for the beast and stab him repeatedly until he is dead.

Simon is really just misunderstood because Ralph thinks he is a big help. As he says in the story, 'Simon, he helps. ' ; Ralph is referring in this quote to the building of the shelters. The only people who work to get shelters from the rain are Ralph, Piggy, and Simon. Now Piggy did not stand a chance from the beginning. When they first get on the island all everyone does is make fun of him and that does not stop until his death in the end of the story.

The thing that the others do not notice is that Piggy is a smart kid who knows what he is doing. He knows that if he sticks on Ralph's side, he " ll probably get the chance to go home. Piggy says in the story to Jack's group, 'You " re acting like a crowd of kids. Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up. ' ; Piggy is trying to tell all the boys who had painted themselves like savages that he wand's to be rescued and go home why didn't they. What he is saying is that if they do not act soon their chance at going home could float or fly by without even noticing them.

The two boys that were the leaders and survived because of their consistent calmness and knowledge of what to do were Ralph and Jack. First of all Ralph was mature and responsible before his time. He handled the whole plane crash situation like he had done it before. He knew exactly what to do, how to build a fire for a smoke signal, make shelters from the rain, etc. The thing that Piggy says about Ralph makes a lot of sense. He says, 'Which is better, to be a pack of painted Indians like you are, or to be sensible like Ralph is.

' ; When Piggy says sensible he's talking about Ralph's tenacity and passion on finding a way home. All that Jack's group wants to do is hunt and kill and pretend that they " ll be all right even without adults. Now Jack at first is a good sport about not being picked to be the chief, but over time he grows tired of Ralph bossing him around therefore he starts his own group. The main thing that started Ralph and Jack's hatred toward each other was the fire. Whenever Jack was the watchman he just up and left to go hunt and the fire went out.

Just after that a ship passed by, but couldn't see that there were people on the island because there was no smoke. Ralph knew that the ship could have been his ticket home, but all Jack had to say was, 'There's no signal now. Nothing to show. You " re nuts on the signal.

' ; What jack is saying is that Ralph is too worried about the signal and he needs to relax a little and have some fun. The only fun Ralph can think about is home. The reason Jack and Ralph survive this dreadful experience and Piggy and Simon don't is because Piggy and Simon do not possess the qualities that Ralph and Jack do. These qualities mainly include bravery and leadership. Either Piggy or Simon does not possess the first, bravery. The both of them just want to go home.

The most important quality that Ralph and Jack own is leadership because without leadership they wouldn't have all these kids following them around doing whatever they told them to do. Piggy and Simon are some of those followers and this is what ultimately leads to their death.
