When he lets them know what's going on he shouts out, "Partner up and start drilling". Once they are finished, drilling Jesse goes over some technique of the wrestling moves he wants to work on that day. When he goes over the wrestling moves the intensity slows down a little bit and now it is time to wrestle live. Jesse has a tough duty in front of him and that is to get his wrestlers motivated again to go all out when they are wrestling live. His wrestlers partner up and Jesse screams at the top of his lungs, "Do not hold anything back when you are wrestling.
If you hold back in here then you will hold back when you are on the mat against someone else!" This motivates his wrestlers and they worked until they couldn't work anymore. Part of his duty for the day was done and that was wrestling practice. After practice is over, Jesse stays around if anybody has questions or if they want to wrestle more. Jesse Nelson is the head wrestling coach and physical education teacher at Ridgewater College.
He is married and has two kids. Jesse attended high school at St. James, MN and then went on to college at Ridgewater for two years in which he was a three sport athlete. Jesse played football, baseball, and wrestled for the Warriors; he then transferred out to St. Cloud State University where he got a scholarship to wrestle. Jesse got his teaching degree through St. Cloud and then he started his coaching and teaching career at the high school level. He taught and coached at Greenbush High School where Jesse was a very successful coach, coaching two kids to a state championship and three others to placing in the state tournament. Jesse has always wanted to coach and teach at the college level.
Jesse's wrestling coach when he went to Ridgewater was Jack Den holm, and Jack is the man who kept Jesse interested in academics which was a big part to Jesse's success as a student. Jack was a very good wrestling coach and Jesse's inspiration to coach and teach. Jesse said, "Jack was a very professional guy; however he could joke around with the best of them. This guy is the one who secured in my mind that I was going to teach". Jesse also said, "That he knew someday he would take Jack's job at Ridgewater as the head wrestling coach and physical education teacher". Jesse did get the job and now the two will compete against each other for the national team title.
Jesse was hired here at Ridgewater last spring. He had to go through a very long and difficult hiring process. First he had to send in a cover letter and five letters of reference. Then he was sent a package of five very difficult questions he was to answer before his interview. Next was the interview that was in front of a panel of five people, which is called the hiring committee.
Finally he met with the wrestlers and they interviewed him as well. Athletics have been a huge part of his life ever since Jesse can remember. Jesse has been impacted by so many coaches and teachers he felt like that is where he wanted to go with his life. Jesse said, "The best component of being a wrestling coach is being able to spend five months out of the year with the wrestling team and basically becoming a family". He wants to impact kids the same way he was impacted. Jesse feels like there is not a better feeling in the world when he impacts a kid's life in a good way.
When teaching in high school Jesse felt like he was very close to all the other staff members. The hardest element Jesse has had to deal with teaching here at Ridgewater as a teacher is being on a more individual based structure of teaching. Jesse has dealt with a lot of obstacles with his athletes. The biggest problem Jesse has been dealing with is trying to get his freshmen wrestlers to go to class everyday and therefore trying to keep them eligible. Another obstruction he has run into is trying to get the kids that he has recruited to actually come out for wrestling. He says, "They just get here and party or hang out with friends and not worry about working hard every day in wrestling practice and the classroom".
Jesse has had some downfalls; however he has had a lot more perks being a coach and teacher here at Ridgewater. Jesse loves being able to joke around with his students and athletes, but also knows they can perform on a professional level when needed. On a normal day Jesse arrives at his office at about nine o' clock, and gets ready for his classes he has that day. Then he will go eat breakfast at the Coffee ology and read the newspaper. Next he will teach his classes and talk with whatever students have questions or students he needs to talk to. After classes he gets prepared for wrestling practice.
He writes up a practice plan and heads into practice. When practice is over he goes home and tries to spend as much time as he can with his family. Jesse is a very busy man and does not get a lot of time to spend with his family. He says, "I treats my wrestling team as my family and my loving wife is very supportive of that".
His wife understands that he has a lot going on and knows that he is not able to spend as much time with her when wrestling is going on. Jesse also said "There is a point where family just comes first". He tells his wife that all the time and that is why she is so respectful of him and his job. Jesse feels that the whole physical education department has helped him the most in his job here at Ridgewater. He says, "They are always coaches in the Physical Education asking if he needs help with anything and making sure everything is going well for him". They have been great supporters since he has been here.
Jesse has been enthused since he has been here at Ridgewater and hopes that the enthusiasm will stay in his heart as long as he is at Ridgewater. Jesse said, "He has one ultimate goal and that is to win the national wrestling team championship at least once". Jesse plans on staying here at Ridgewater for a long period of time coaching, teaching, and influencing young adult lives in the best possible he knows how.
