Holding Canada Back From The War example essay topic
Peace rallies all over the planet are by themselves no reason to influence US's decision on the war. They would indeed be a poor nation if they suddenly stopped the war because of a peaceful protest. On the other hand Canada will be acting wisely if it listened to the voice of the people of the world. It would bring sympathy to our country from the UN as well as ordinary people. Canada has not often been taking a stand against the USA. This kind of controversial behaviour would bring attention to our nation, and mark it as a peaceful one that obeys not the sole superpower's decision but one rationed by a great many nations.
The key reason the war has been started is that Iraq was considered a great threat to US. There was evidence to support that the disarming process was well on the way. Starting a war is not a good way to get rid of one single dictator that can any day launch his weapons of mass destruction (that is, if Saddam has any). Iraq's economy is at its lowest in the last few decades, and it could hardly be considered a threat. If the aim was to kill Saddam Hussein, then they really should have aimed better.
There is nothing to attack in Iraq but cities, and the USA has also already bombed the nearby countries. This is a very bad war to support because it is so poorly lead. It looks like the US's invasion is demolishing cities, Baghdad already partially invaded, and causing the life support cuts rather than killing Saddam or eliminating any threat. I do not see how Canada's support can possibly do any good to any of the opposing sides now or in the future. Possibly, better decision is to help out the Iraqis afterwards so they would not make us their future target in case Iraq ever revives. Canada's opposition to the war has a negative side.
What could we do if US increases the tax on the trade? United States gets most of their natural resources like lumber from Canada. It would not do much good to them or to us to refuse to trade. It has been said numerous times that Canada's position on the war will in no way affect the Canada - US relationship. This war is none of Canada's business. This does not mean it does not affect us.
War with a plentiful country like Iraq (oil) affects everyone, but no other country can either change the situation to fit it's terms, or get a portion of the income US could acquire through this overtaking. The methods used and the warfare are brutal. Looking back on the decision Canada has made no to join the war so far, it appears Canada made no mistake. There are good reasons like the methods of war, the absence of the threat, the impossibility to kill Saddam with bombs, as well as others holding Canada back from the war.
The war in Iraq is not significant enough to make us pay with reputation and UN sympathy for joining up with US.
