"The fate of our planet will be determined in the next few decades, through our technological, lifestyle, and population choices". by Bill McKibben The Earth has provided for and nourished us for millions of years. Yet, with the destruction of the environment from our consumption and industry, we are not only endangering ourselves, but the future of our posterity. The environment must be protected - for ourselves, for our children. One generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth abides forever... That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. A variety of environmental problems now affect our entire world.

As globalization continues and the earth's natural processes transform local problems into international issues, few elements are being left untouched by major environmental problems. Pollution, hazardous wastes and many other environmental problems create major health threat to all the people on Earth. The human race as a whole generates over 350 million metric tons of hazardous waste each year. Through our industry and consumption, we are destroying the rainforest and its ecosystems. We are polluting the Earth's air, rivers and seas.

The soil beneath us is suffering from industrial mis-use and chemicals, while the ozone above us is withering away, exposing us to dangerous rays from outer space. I say we need to protect this earth, if people want to keep on living. For instance, the ozone layer is one of the things we need in order to stay alive. If we don't have an ozone layer, then the ultraviolet rays from the sun will cause us to have cancer and soon die.

We need to stop littering because it can also kill us. The things that decompose eventually leak down into our water and could cause us to get a disease. Global warming is another reality that is extremely dangerous. Global warming is called the greenhouse effect because the gases that are gathering above the earth make the planet comparable to a greenhouse. By trapping heat near the surface of the earth, the greenhouse effect is warming the planet and threatening the environment.

Current fears stem largely from the fact that global warming is occurring at such a rapid pace. Models are predicting that over the next century, the global temperature will rise by several degrees. Attention for water pollution exploded in the 1980's. The oil spill of the Exxon Valdez showed many around the world just how horrible the effects of water pollution could be.

Every year, 14 billions pounds of sewage, sludge, and garbage are dumped into the world's oceans. 19 trillion gallons of waste also enter the water annually. The problem of ocean pollution affects every nation around the world. This is especially true because water is able to transport pollution from one location to another. Major events in history continue to affect the environment many years after they happened.

Every environmental problem has causes, numerous effects, and most importantly, a solution. We must Keep the earth clean, and we well survive on this earth longer then expected..
