The Antagonist of the story Was the Misfit the antagonist in the story or was it the Grandmother? In A Good Man Is Hard To Find, by Flannery O? Conner, a family of five decides to go on vacation. Many things go wrong resulting in a terrible ending.

The author uses a lot of foreshadowing to show how the story will end. She does this to make the Grandmothers unawareness clear. It is evident that the Grandmother is the antagonist in the story because she led them down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, caused them to get in an accident, and was eventually the reason for everyone's death. The Grandmother can be portrayed as the antagonist when she leads the family on a dirt road that is supposed to lead to a house that is actually in another state.?? It's not much farther, ? the Grandmother said and just as she said it, a horrible thought came to her the house she had remembered so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee.?

It was this act that brought on the downfall of the family. Because of the Grandmothers absentmindedness the family traveled down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere with a killer on the loose. When describing the house the Grandmother states, ?? There was a secret panel in this house? , she said craftily, not telling the truth but wishing she were.?

It is this lying nature that is proof that she is the antagonist of the story. If she had acted like a normal person the events that took place would not have happened. The Misfit was an evil person, but he was truthful and had to do what was necessary so that he didn? t get caught. It wasn? t what he had done that ended the family, but what the actions of the Grandmother that got them killed.
